Computer Help

Hi Folks,

I have a Dell Inspiron 530 desktop, it's just a couple of years old. The other day we had a bad storm, the next day it was powered off, I went to push the power button, it lit up for under a second, there was a slight whir sound, then nada.

Holding the power button down cause the power light to blink and multiple little whirs, like something is trying to start. It was connected to a power strip, and all the other connected accessories (printer, modem, router, etc) are fine.

Does this sound like it's *just* a new power supply that I might be needing?

Thanks in advance - Chris

The power went out for sure, all the lights were blinking in the house. Nothing else had issues though, so I'm not sure. I'd have thought the surge protector would have blocked the surge.

I should have specified, the power strip had a built-in surge protector as well.

It sounds like a new PSU is all you need. Worse case scenario would be the motherboard.

Had that happen on a Mac and it was the logic board.

Let's hope it's the PSU, an easy and inexpensve fix, but like everyone else has said, it could be that or (hope not) the motherboard.

I'm not specifically a computer tech, but as a guess, I'd say the PSU from the symptoms. Even with a Surge protector, a voltage spike can fry something in the power supply.

Only PSU, if your lucky. Motherboard and CPU may also be fried?

90% sure it's just the power supply.

It's a very common problem with their 250/300W power supplies. I've changed two on my daughter's old PC and my parent's current one.

£15 for the replacement 450W rated one.
