Some advice on Explorer I pricing

I am planning my next purchase on either a DD or Explorer I

There are not many (I might be wrong) DD offerings and price seems pretty much 'the same'. But for Explorer I, it seems to be quite a big price range on the various offers found in TRF/VRF.

a quick search shows:
Explorer I Y serial, $2950
Explorer 114270, S serial, 78360 Oyster band, 558B end links, $2600.00
Explorer 114270, U serial, $2,450
Explorer 1, 1016, serial 4.1 milion, matte dial, $6300 (?)


My questions:

without taking into consideration box & paper, and assuming the same 'good' condition (say 85%+) , what are other 'main' price factors?

dial? matter? gilts (gilt dial seems to make a lot of different!)?
model? how many model are there? (114270, 1016?)
year? what are S, Y, Z serial?
band?

Well, the 1016 is vintage and highly collectible. They can and do often sell for more than that.

There is also the 14270 which is visually identical to the 114270. These will be older and the movement will differ slightly.

Starting right now, there is a new Explorer model that is larger @ 39mm. It is the 214270.

Just make sure it's authentic (cuz explorer I is very easy to copy) and make sure it works!!!!!!
If not wait for the new 39mm explorer!!!!

The Explorer is a great watch, but if you need to ask how to differentiate a 1016 from other models I propose that you either spend some time learning more about the Explorer before purchasing, or buy a new model 114270.

The 1016 comes in several iterations with different (minor differencies) dials, hands and calibers. To try to summarize it:

1016: Matte dial, painted markers and plastic crystal, slow beat movement.
114270/14270: Gloss dial, applied white gold markers, sapphire crystal, high beat movement.
