Setting a trade price on Explorer I

Hi everybody:

I am a long time watcher but new member.

I am thinking about getting ready to trade my Explorer I with an established pre-owned dealer (talking with several) and am trying to get an idea of a fair price (looking for another 40mm sports watch to compliment my Y Series SS Sub Date; vintage or newer).

The Explorer I am thinking about trading is a model 114270 which I purchased new at my authorized dealer, in January of 2009. *It is a late D series (early 2006 manufacture) in extremely nice condition, it has all boxes and papers and the band has all links and no stretch. *About a month ago it was timed by the authorized Rolex service person and is running within 1 second per day.

Except for a two week jury trial in 2009, the watch has been worn little, has never been polished but still looks new. I am a fanatic about my watches and gently wipe them down after each wearing.

Attached are two photos I took with my iphone outside in natural lighting.

Any help you can give me on getting a fair price would be appreciated.

Anyway, I have this same watch in very good condition, the thing is near mint. I am sorry to say trade in will not be kind to you. Right now these watches sell preowned for 2500 or less so trade (the person taking the trade will want to make money) will be even less.

I would hold on it or if you need the cash for another watch sell it you'll get more money selling than trading.

An AD will not give you a fair price on a trade-in. If you want the best price for it, sell it private party, if you are able to.

They just introduced the 39mm Explorer I so maybe the 36mm will become more sought after. Only time will tell but right now the prices are soft on this model, perhaps later if the watch becomes more desirable you can get more for it.

I think it'd be worth around $3-3.5k with all the boxes and papers.

Thanks. Can you point me to any data to support this range? I really do not see very many late model Explorer I's in great shape with papers being sold. Maybe I am not looking in the right place.

My uncle just bought a LNIB Explorer 114270 from the 2000s for $3380 with boxes and papers off of ebay. I guess I should say anywhere from $3000 - $4000 then.

I was offered an Exp about 8 months ago from a dealer friend of mine. It was a D serial, Box and papers for $2300 and he was making money on that! I passed, even though it was a great price. I would expect that you would receive the above amount or less on a trade in.

It is a good looking watch though.

If I may ask, how much did you pay for your Explorer I in Jan 2009? The reason that I ask is that many ADs will give you 66% of its present value if you trade in and trade up into a higher retail model.

For example, I bought my GMTII Pepsi in 2001 for $3500. One of my local ADs told me it is now worth about $5600 and they could give me 66% of that on a trade-in which would be $3600. Now I don't plan on trading mine in anytime. In fact, I've had at least 2 ADs tell me don't trade my Pepsi because it will continue to increase in value.

Did I tell you that is a GOOD LOOKING watch?
