Here is a question for you fine ladies and gentlemen. If Rolex, from this day forward, were to switch to exhibition casebacks, would you welcome, or oppose the change. Please explain why or why not.

oppose. I like the solid caseback. If Rolex changed it, I feel that the company is caving in because other companies are doing it.

I don't think the see-through case back could withstand the pressure of diving. I could be wrong...

For a dress watch though...meh....

A Rolex is a tool watch, atleast the versions I use and like. No point looking at the movement. (for me)

Rolex movements are many things, but they are not very pretty. I'd be opposed with the exception of some of their dress watches. For those however, they would have to dress the movements up a little. I dont think a display back would limit a watch's diving ability anymore than the crystal up front....

If they can get the crystal on the front to withstand the pressure, I am sure they can do the same for the back...

I would welcome it, with some more jewels placed in the right location and perhaps a little filigree work on some of the parts I think it would look nice.

Sure it could. Otherwise the front would be steel too. Wouldn't make for much of a watch now would it?

Actually, the best option would be the option to have both with the purchase. Change later to suit.

Agreed Pat,would be nice to have both options when purchasing....
As for the caseback rating,the good ones are rated to 10 Atoms..Deep enough for a dive to the watches limits!!
I like mine alot on my YM...

On a sport watch, I'd have to agree. But then again, I'm so used to it. I cant find a real reason to oppose a display back (beyond cost) I guess its just a personal preference...

Although I do think on some dress watches, a display back looks nice. But considering Rolex's functional (vs. flashy) movements, I think it's an option better suited for other brands...

Thanks Richard.....It's not for everone,and only did it to the YM because I could!! I do actually like to look at it before and after wearing,but otherwise its just a option not really needed...
For Rolex,I don't think it's a good idea,but on Patek etc it looks great IMO.

Love the caseback on my PAM 111 because there is something very cool to see...not so sure I would want / need to see the Rolex workhorse.

Years ago Rolex made a clear caseback for a GMT.

Well Dan, if the seals let go you can watch it fill up with water.

If the rotor bearing wears out you can watch the rotor smash itself to death.

You can show your friends the 3186 movement in the old GMT case.

Or look at the cool blue escapement springy thing.
