Be careful where you park your watch (magnetism lesson; why my watch ran fast)
A couple of months ago my Explorer I began to run about 15 second fast per day (as checked against newly uploaded official time). I was not a happy camper.
Fortunately it is still under original Rolex manufacturer warranty so I took it to my AD. When I got it back, the AD told me that it had to be de-magnitized and to keep it away from whatever source of magnetism I was exposing it to. I was a little skeptical but tried downloading an app for my iphone 3gs which measures magnetic fields. The answer? I was storing the watch in the evening near my macbook pro which has a magnetic coupler for the power cord. It sent the iphone app off the chart. Upside? My Explorer I is now running better than w/1 second per day and I have learned a valuable lesson. Watch out for magnetic fields in computers and be careful where you park your watch when you take your boots off for the night! |

Good point. I wonder if this is why Rolex came out with the Parachrom hairspring?
Theoretically, the Parachrom hairspring should prevent this.

parachrom is only part of the solution. the rest of the parts are still steel. It happened to several of my watches as well and Rolex took care of them

Forgot to say that I have never had this problem with my ss sub date. It was parked in the same place. Maybe because of the thicker case?

Rolex developed their own Parachrom hairspring because ETA announced (several years back) that after this year they would no longer provide Nivarox-FAR hairsprings to non Swatch companies...
It had nothing to do with any shortcomings with the Nivarox hairsprings used which too are anti-magnetic.. As said though, many of the other parts are still influenced by a magnetic field... except the Milgauss, which is made of different metal alloys. However, it too is only guaranteed up to 1000 Gauss before a strong magnetic field will affect it's operation.......
