anyone have to play the mail your rolex game
I was dealing with a non ad dealer from another state who said if i walk into his store and buy a rolex and wear it out of his store he would have to charge tax but if he mailed it to my home then i wouldnt have to pay tax. i didnt feel comfortable mailing my rolex so i payed the extra 400 bucks to wear it out of the store. Anyone else ever run into this?

Otherwise it is tax fraud. Some ADs are stricter about this than others.

The state you bought it in... (And I don't mean the state of excitement or compulsion!)

I just purchased a SS Sub last Saturday. I saved 10% by buying with cash and shipping the watch back to St. Louis to my parents. My parents shipped it back to me as soon as they received it. In all, I saved about $500. I figure if I use the same "strategy", my 10th Rolex will be free...........................
I had the same reservations as you did but everything worked just fine for me. Cheers....... |

Some AD will let you wear the watch out of the store and mail the box to your or another state to save you the tax. True, not all AD will do that!

B & L in Maui would ship (for free) the watch home saving you the tax (4.16%).
I have asked if they could ship the box only, but they would not do it.

I dont mind paying shipping instead of tax..esp on a Rolex purchase! Tax is roughly $400 on a $5000 watch and overnight shipping is about $50. I have had many watches mailed(overnite)to me!

Two years ago in Hawaii, an AD offered to send just the box back to to my home to save the tax....but there was no additional discount, so I passed.

I had a deal in Knoxville, TN that fell through because I thought this was strange. Looking back, the AD was trying to save me money. It was for a new GMTII that I wish I had bought. Huge discount at the time.

I'll take the tax savings any day of the week.
