I was just curious to hear from other members which model you feel is more "linked" to the brand. In other words, when a person hears the word Rolex, which model is pictured in their mind?
I guess I'd have to say the Sub or Day-Date.

I would say that the Datejust is the definitive Rolex watch, with the Submariner following closely. IMHO...

I'll go with the Datejust as well. My TTDJ with black dial, flutted bezel is classic.

A lot of watches look like Explorer 1's, Sub's, DJ's, etc.

A Pepsi GMT is distinctively Rolex. :)

I vote for the datejust. Even though I own two of the sport watches the first ads I used to see were for the DJ. I think the jubilee bracelet and fluted bezel must be the most copied symbols. Everbody from Seiko to Timex has a DJ look-a-like!

Naturally when I hear Rolex today, I immediately think of the DJs I own now, plus my 2 previous DJs.

But before I owned a Rolex and could only DREAM of owning one, it was the Day-Date President that defined Rolex to me.

Rolex History 101:

Correct me if I'm wrong Rolex historians, but didn't JFK and LBJ both wear Day-Dates, which lead to the President moniker for the bracelet? And, wasn't it a Day-Date that Marilyn Monroe gave to JFK at his birthday gala?

Actually, Rolex sent President Eisenhower a Day-Date with the bracelet that is now known as the "President". The entire watch with that bracelet is now known as the "President". Yes, both JFK and LBJ did wear them - it had become a tradition by then.

Good thread starter, Andrew.

Although I was tempted to vote for the Sub, in all fairness and truth, it's the Datejust that is the actual quitessential Rolex without a doubt....and that too the TT DJ.

I should know!! Having lived in India and visited the Far East several times, it's the DJ that is the most sought after and instantly recognised. Yes, and it's the TT DJ on Jubilee that stands out the most.

Whether we like it or not, that's not important. Facts are facts.

The TT DJ on Jubilee is probably the fastest selling Rolex in the line-up.

It has to be the traditional Datejust. It is immediately recognizable as such and has been copied by Seiko and others because it sells.

My first experience was with Rolex Presidential Day/Date model. That was the model with the cyclops eye that got me hooked. But I never bought it, instead my first was the DateJust, and then Subs.

Although, I like the GMT and Submariner.

In all fairness, it would be the Datejust that has the most impact in terms of "instant recognition".

Trailing behind would be the Day Date, I think? IMHO due to the various Rolex golf ads featuring the DD on many of Rolexes ambassadors.

Wow. Dead even tie for the Submariner and DJ with my vote, though I admit it was a biased one. I think here in the states the Sub is the most popular...I see that more than anything else, especially among gentlemen. I'm told, however, that in Europe and Asia the DJ is considerably more popular. Still, I'm a softie for the Sub. JJ's got me even liking a model I never did...the TT Blue.

The DJ was the main Rolex to own. The DayDate image was always the model in the Yellow pages to find a AD or repair man.

I must say DJ, Its the most classic design, Yet can be had in many many configurations (dials, bracelets and finishes) Everybody can tell it is a Rolex right away, And it has a great background.

As for the sport models, I would say a Sub... Great history and also very popular (not to mention everyone tries to copy it as well)

Well the 4467 launched in 1945 the first DJ and thats the Grandaddy of Rolex of what we have today.Sure the Sub is the sports icon but world wide the DJ is still the top Rolex seller.Great post Mike by the way, could not agree more the modern stuff just Rolex pretenders.
