Sub C Green Gold Controversy

This just in from a "reliable source!" The term "green gold", originally used by Rolex to describe the dial, was given because the color was actually made with gold; a combination of 18K yellow gold, aluminum, and other metal combinations to give the dial its green gold color. It is NOT paint. I feel confident this is factual reliable info. I'm still waiting to find out if the entire dial consists of this alloy or if it is only a surface "veneer" of alloy. As most of you know, the Rolex website has changed its description of the dial from Green Gold to Green.

If that dial is not solid 18K green gold, then I'm sorry to say, it's not worth the extra 500 dollars on the price difference.

What the hell are we paying that extra for? A coat of paint?

Still waiting to hear if it is actually a coating on a brass base plate dial or possibly the dial is the alloy. I hope that's it!

Agee. But the 16610 LV was also more expensive than the 16610, so Rolex is just following what they started.

Fair enough...........over there the price difference if I remember correctly was like 400 bucks...............and here it's 500.

So looks like Rolex love to capitalise on their GREEN colour - nothing else!!

I'm going to get one of those dials and peel it apart just to show it's not a solid plug of green gold!

If it were solid gold, $500 wouldn't cover it's weight in scrap gold.

As far as the dials coating on the top, a side profile, and rear shot should end the theory.

The green dials should be made just like every other Rolex dial. The foil, and brass plug are stamped together, and then brushed. The hole is drilled in the middle, and twa la..

Is that the way the rhodium dial is made, just a "foil" of rhodium pressed onto brass?

To begin with the 16610 LV was expected as an limited edition and therefore the higher price could be explained, but if the new LV does not have an gold dial there is no logical explanation .. except because Rolex can do it and still sell....

Did you in fact buy one? I know that the price difference would not be worth it to me, that's one of the reasons I did not and will not buy an LV. (The other reason being that I think a green watch on me would look stupid). But Rolex charges what they charge because they can; plain and simple. Always have, always will.

I always assumed it was a coating, similar to enameling I thought. I figured the price difference due to the different process compared to black, and as mentioned above mostly due to the fact it is different, or more exclusive, like the previous LV. After all with the 16610 LV there really shouldn't be much difference in build cost for maxi dial and green bezel, yet it too was at a premium of $500.

Another viewpoint:

I've never considered the price of a Rolex to be equal to the materials involved in making them. Rolex is able to price according to the public's perceived notion of 'specialness' of a watch. The all green LV is promoted as 'special' and therefore deserving of a higher price. Non-WISs will pay based on this.

Look at a 2-tone versus SS watch, is there REALLY that much gold in them to justify the higher price Rolex charges? No. Do people buy them in droves anyway? Yes.

Why do you pay more for a SS Daytona than a TT Daytona? 'Special'...not materials.

Same with this green dial. It's different, unique, new, and 'special'; so long as the mass public believes that, they will pay more...$500 more for a drop or two of green paint.

But this is why we all love Rolex, isn't it???

I seriously doubt it has a gold dial, not even the gold rolexes have gold dials. It's just a different model and for that rolex have given it a set price, maybe because of the limited numbers, or maybe because of the niche market, who knows, but i'd say it's a normal dial with a coating to give it the colour.

I would assume Rolex charges more for the green dial simply because they can ... it's new, relatively scarce, and therefore some buyers are willing to pay for more it.

Even after they become "readily" available (if they ever do), they are still priced at a premium according to the catalogue.

I thought I read that it is an aluminum disk that is bombarded with gold, using the same process Rolex uses to put gold/platinum on the numbers of their ceramis bezels.

Watch time, maybe?

Might have been here.

Absolutely right JJ - the Milgauss GV sells for a premium (maybe US$300) because of a green-tinted crystal!

No, Chris, I haven't and never will. Green just isn't my colour. On the other, BLACK would be strong contender!!
