Why do so many people dislike Panerai's?

I've just been browsing the web and finding a lot of people disliking panerai's saying they aren't real watches, how they will end up dying out because it is just a trend/fad etc etc. I find myself laughing at some of the responses saying that other brands are far more superior then Panerai because they use ETA's movements. I know that Panerai decorates the ETA movements that are put in there watches but, I have been told ETA movements that are decorated by Panerai are movements that are just as reliable as most in-house movements.

I am fairly new to Panerai's and recently bought a 297 :). Just wondering if the Panerai folks here can shed some light on why these people would say such things of a watch company that has so much history ? O_o

Panerai has recently become more prevalent with the "folks with too much disposable income" who snatch them up (over, say, a Rolex). Therefore more people will comment on them these days. Some of that talk is negative.

I say keep the hate alive, b/c if the demand get's any bigger for Panerai then the prices will just go through the roof. They are already high enough already.

Hi Voss,

The Valjoux 7750-P1 blueprinted by Panerai is one of the most reliable and accurate watch movements available.

Don't read too much into Web opinions.

I love every watch I own for different reasons. Only have one Panerai, a Pam 88, but have the gold Radiomir on my list to buy this year.

I think people who aren't well informed think the watches are over priced for their simple look, plus I think alot of Afliction-esque meat head guys that tend to like Panerai give the brand a bad name.

Exactly...It's just a matter of taste...

There is also a fair bit of "snobbery" around....people 'think' they have bags of knowledge and that gives them a right to frown upon certain brands. They are simply naive.

I really enjoy gazing at a Panerai on my wrist..they are a stunning watch - someone criticising the movement isn't going to change that for me.

Whenever I look down at one of my PAMs, I always get a big smile on my face. While the designs may look simple to some, but for me (and I'm sure other collectors) each piece is a work of art and not everybody appreciates fine art. Just look at Van Gogh and Picasso whose original works of art were disliked by many and now are worth in millions.

Enjoy your 297 and welcome to TRF!

Cheers.

As mentioned already, haters will always be haters.

I'm sure many people are aware that the more/most collectable watches ATM don't usually have their in-house movement. Rolex is one of them.

Now that Panerai is moving towards full in-house movement models, this move will probably make those ones with ETA more "desirable" in the future...

People that dislike the PAM's don't know the history behind them. Hey, to each their own.

I think there are two reasons for anti-Panerai sentiment - not everyone likes big watches and some people think it doesn't make sense to pay Panerai prices for watches with ETA/Valjoux movements.

I say everyone is entitled to his or her own opinion and ultimately people vote with their wallets. The fact that Panerai prices are as high as they are proves that there are heckuva lot more Panerai lovers than haters!

Incidentally, I own two and love them!

I don't know if you would call mr a 'hater' I have been shopping around for Panerai's for awhile now. I will get my first Panerai because I want a more diverse range of watches but I know the quality doesn't come close to a Rolex for the amount of money I pay. Just my honest opinion.

Superb watches.. Maybe a lot of the negative opinion is from those whom are struggling to afford one...
