He was a pioneer in his field...anyone using a leg extension machine at a gym is using a piece of equipment that he invented. An amazing guy.

The guy looked amazing even in his 80s! He worked out every single day even in his 90s. Very impressive.

I remember sitting in front on the TV when I was a kid watching his program; not exercising to it, just watching it.

He truly was a trailblazer.

I met him at his home in Morro Bay in late 2000. We were visiting friends, and it turned out our friends were close friends with Jack and his wife, Elaine. He was around 85-86 years old then. He had a tremendous amount of energy, more than most people I've seen decades younger, and I personally witnessed him bounding up and down his staircase, showing us around his home, while being very friendly and talkative. He said he got out of bed at around 5:30 am. and worked out for 2 hours every day.

He had several free weights and weight machines at home, and showed us his "museum," of the prototypes or early models of weight machines and devices that he invented, that are in everyday use in gyms even today. He told us he opened his first gym in the 1930s (he told me the year, but I forget...1939, I think?). He also swam laps in his pool.

Although I met him for only about an hour, he struck me as a great guy. I'm sad to see him go. He was a great ambassador for fitness, and a true American entrepreneur, founding a chain of gyms and being one the pioneers in the fitness movement.

He was a stud back in the day and did some incredible feats of strength and stamina. His zest for life was something we could all learn from.

He started one of the first excercise tv shows. He also started a number of workout studios around California. My mother joined one as I recall. He'd always say, "if man made it, don't eat it."
