Excellent sighting/conversation today!

My neighborhood had a garage sale today and a guy stopped by to look at a car I have for sale. I quickly noticed he was wearing a vintage Submariner - the raised acrylic gave it away . I just had to say something. He bought it in the early 70's in Europe while he was in the service. It was engraved on the caseback, but was almost completely worn away. It had raised acrylic, a beautiful matte dial, and non SEL bracelet. He mentioned that the bracelet had been replaced once before. The bezel pearl was missing and there were quite a few scratches on the bracelet and crystal, but it still looked ABSOLUTELY BEAUTIFUL! I offered to trade my car ('71 MG Midget) for the Sub, but he just laughed. He said he bought it new for only $300! You could tell that he really loved the watch. I asked him if he knew what model # the Sub was, but he didn't know. Anyway, that's my exciting Rolex news for the day.

Jeff,
As beautiful as the Sub is I can't believe you would have considered throwing in the MG for it

Yep, it had a date. How much is this model worth?

I also forgot to mention a few things...

He mentioned that one time he lost the entire bezel off of the watch. He's not sure how it happened, he just looked down one day and it was gone and had to order a new one. He also said that one time while setting his watch the entire crown came out of the case. I've heard of this before, but have never actually met someone (in the flesh) that this has happened to.

As always price is dependent on condition. Since it was an early 70s issue, it's possible itcould have been a RED. A bit later might have been a WHITE.

REDs are really getting up there. I've seen vintage dealer asking over 7K with SCs going around 6.5K or so in the U.S.
Whites seem to be around 4-4.5K depending.

There have been ocassions where it caught just right the bezel has popped off. I had a winding crown come out once. Easy fix! I'm not a watchmaker, but as I understand it there's a small screw that can or rare ocassions work lose.

One of the watch makers can explain much better that me.

I had the crown come out on my GMT once. It was no big deal but was a bit traumatic at the time. When you think of the force a person can generate on that small area, it's a wonder it doesn't happen more often!
