Sub vs Planet Ocean

I am in the fortunate position to own both. I had never worn the PO untill this weekend. What I noticed was that with the PO that the second hand started sweeping literally with in a second or two of picking it up and needed no manual winding to get it going were as the Sub seems to need winding or at the very least, which I don't really like doing, a good shake to get it going.

Can the technically minded here explain the reason for this.

BUddy of mine has a PO and he loves it. Has the newer co-axial movement.
Only thing I do not like about the watch he has is the orange bezel. Also the watch is alot larger, I think around 42mm. Too big for me, but looks good on him as he is 6' 4" tall

I like bigger watches, I have had to have extra links added to all the Rolex's I have owned including this one so bigger watches suite my wrist, my PO has a steel bracelet and orange bezel and I am really getting to like it now that I have worn it for a weekend. Maybe it is just the newness of the Sub, might start up a little quicker once it is run in a bit. I have to say one other observation is that the second hand on the Sub does appear to sweep ever so slightly smoother than the PO

I agree with you.
Even I had the seamaster chronograph caliber 3303 with column wheel escape mechanism and literally as soon as I used to pick it up it used to start but thts not the case with Rolex Daytona. It needs little bit winding or a harder movement.
But also tell you one thing once the Daytona starts running then the ball is in totally court of Rolex Daytona.
The movement is so smooth n noiseless even when you bring the watch near your ear to hear its mechanism sound you can't but thts not in case of any Omega or Breitling I owned. Also the power reserve is really really HUGE 72 hrs just awesome n gr8 for a chronograph movement.
So finally my Daytona wins n obviously Rolex wins over Omega
Rolex watches are truly uncomparable.Superb

But I do like the PO, it is a nice watch with a quality feel to it. I have had a look at a couple of Daytona's here and as you say they are superb watches, I was very tempted but going to hold out for a day date.

One possible solution would be to wear both, seemingly popular with crazy Italians, when I was in town recently there were a crowd of Italian guys, one was wearing a GMT on one wrist and on the other he had something similar to my U-Boat and you can buy a D&G with two watches on one strap.

Only in Italy

I also was suprised by my Omega's noisy movement (not co-axial) - can defninitely hear it just from some rapid wrist movement.

Bought a new PO from an AD discounted to US$2900 last year. The watch initially appealed to me and I wore it continually for a few months.

I flipped it because I personally found it too heavy on my wrist and it was either too loose or too tight with the bracelet not having clasp adjustment holes. It was an orange bezel model the black bezel was unavailable discounted, so I took it and after a week or so of ownership, began to think it was a bit too flamboyant for me at my age. Wife agreed on this. I was going to get a black bezel to replace the orange.

Don't get me wrong, the PO is a great watch and has a very accurate movement. I see a few of them for sale now, I don't really know why. The resale value of it drops significantly after 2 or 3 years. I saw one recenty only 6 months old with all the cards and box and the asking price was just US$1950. New AD price in the Gold Coast area is US$3985 (AU$4800) which is a bit steep.

My daily wear once again is the Submariner which is more comfortable on my wrist than any other watch with an SS bracelet. It also looks great without being flash.

Maybe I would have thought twice if they had been full price, at todays exchange rates I picked it up for a shade over $2800 US and have since been back to the AD to see about getting a black bezel and strap just to have on the off chance I fancy a change. But like my green sub the orange bezel makes it just a bit different and you don't see to many of either on a daily basis.

I'd wind to get it started, not shake.....Not sure if Padi has thoughts on this, but I always cringe when an AD picks up a Rollie and gives it a vigorous shake to get it going...

Agreed! Never kick start any stopped automatic watch with a vigorous shake. It's better to just swirl the watch in a plane parallel to the ground...as you would a fine after-dinner brandy!!

Once it starts up, just give it around 40 turns of the crown and you're back in business!!

Totally agreed
Even I follow the same fashion.

I am fortunate to own an SD and a PO. Got the PO a few weeks ago from an AD. The Sub is on my wish list.

We all know that the SD is a great watch. The PO is also an excellent watch, IMHO. It glows even at dusk. I noticed its luminosity, when I was wearing it the first day I took it home.

The SS bracelet of the SD fits me well, so with the PO, due to it having half link. The SD however, has this classic and sophisticated "aura" that distinguishes it from the PO. I infer that this is true with a Sub as well. I am extremely happy with both.

Correct but don't think it would harm the movement in anyway if you gently shake it to start. You are only doing the same as would happen on your wrist or winder. And Dont forget thats the only way you can start some Seiko movements. But a manual wind now and then of any automatic watch will be more beneficial to movement, than do any harm.
