Hi guys,

Currently I wear this Rolex 18k YG 18238 DD as daily beater. But recently, a friend of mine offered me his 18kYG PP Calatrava (Ref.3998). When I asked about the price, he said he is willing to take my DD for that and I need to pay nothing.

As I am new with PP, I don't know if it's a good deal or not.

I post the same question in Patek's forum in Timezone. And you know the answer, they suggest me to swap my DD with the Calatrava. But I still love my DD very much. Your opinion on this matter would be highly appreciated.

Myself although not a huge fan of gold watches would keep the 18238.Agree Patek make some very fine movements,but they are not so forgiving as the Rolex movements, Pateks need a bit more care and attention.But the final choice must be yours if you love your DD keep it.

The Patek is nice...and the lust to have one was strong...but the experience didn't live up to the fantasy and now I really miss my DD. And I think the Patek market is getting very soft...and will get even softer.

PP makes beautiful jewelery that somehow (for me) never rises to the level of tool. Rolex (for me) makes a beautiful tool that over the years has become wearable as jewelery.

I can't tell you anything useful about the comparative pricing of the two pieces because I only follow them occasionally, but I do think both PP and Rolex tend to be the best overall performers in general when it comes to pricing in the secondary markets.

From what you said, it sounds like you have a strong emotional bond to your DD Rolex, so why trade? Even if you make a few bucks, if you don't like the PP as much, even though you know you "should" because it's a very fine brand and watch, it doesn't seem like you will get the same emotional satisfaction out of wearing it, so why do this? If you want the PP because you want to impress others, well, I think Rolex is a far more recognized brand by the general public, but I suppose it depends on who you want to impress. PP makes a fine watch, but they cost a lot to service and you will have to service them pretty regularly whereas Rolex watches are cheap to service by comparison and they get your watch back to you in a month or so while PP will often take 6 months. So it all depends on what you take pleasure in. Some people would never be happy with a relatively common watch like a Rolex and would never be happy until they bought the PP. Others would have just the opposite reaction.

I agree with most of you guys, beside I'm still wondering until now, why my friend is wanting my DD so much that he is willing to trade his beloved Calatrava with it...I think there must be something behind it.... :))
