Another "end of the world as we know it"

Joe Soucheray has a radio show on which he occasionally announces events signifying the "end of the world as we know it." This new one definitely deserves the title.

Snooki from Jersey Shore is being paid $32,000 to "speak" to the Rutgers University student body. That's $2,000 more than they are paying a Nobel Laureate to speak at the upcoming commencement ceremonies.

Snooki is famous for drinking binges, fighting and promiscuity. The Nobel Laureate is known only for contributing to the advancement of modern society and literature. Interestingly, the students interviewed about the upcoming speech feel that Snooki speaks more to their generation than the Nobel winner. Yikes.

Rutgers must be desperate for speakers.

Agreed that is silly, but I'm sure parents have felt that way throughout the generations about all kinds of things (some of which we consider normal and acceptable).

Joey , the worrying thing is the fact that we ( our generation ) fathered these "students"

Snooky is significantly older than I am. She is just a caricature of a certain social culture. They are popular because people find it funny that they are so ridiculous. And that's ok, it's entertainment. But it's incredibly sad that she is being paid so much to speak at an institution of higher learning, and more than a Nobel winner. If students at my school said anything like "Snooky speaks to our generation more than a Nobel prize winner" I would be embarrassed.

Edit: she's actually only two years older than me, it's hard to get a read on her age when she wears more makeup than bozo the clown.

Wonder if the Rutgers administration will take some heat for this?

Sad indeed.

Do you guys remembered when Sasha Baron Cohen dressed as Ali G spoke to Harvard's (or was it Princeton...) graduating class? That was intentionally hilarious, a speech worth seeing.

This has to be a joke. Although I saw part of a story about one of the cast members cars being towed recently and I forget the make but it was a Bentley or Lamborghini or a similar vehicle. Whatever the car it was a several hundred thousand dollar vehicle. I've never seen the show and have no plans to see it but it is unavoidable to learn about these characters because they have permeated the media.

The average yearly wage in the US isn't much more than $32k. Sometimes I can see why some societies look upon ours with such disdain.

Wow--higher education sets the bar low! The sad thing is she probably makes $50k an episode and people actually watch that awful show. I turned it on once while going thru the guide--ouch! I can't believe people watch that show--sorry if any of you do--but don't admit it to too many people!!
