The Sub

Hi guys,

I'm pretty sure this is going to end in my being banned.

Everyone seems to love this watch. For some reason, it just doesn't do it for me. Am I the only one who feels this way? Nothing against its gazillion fans, but it just seems....bland. For those of you who do like it, what do you like about it?

I'm going to go sit in the corner and enjoy my last few moments before being banned.

The Sub in brief:
Classic, tough, durable, understated, dressy, casual, neutral, prestigious, recognizable, refinish-able, timeless design. The list could go on….

Haha I'm not trying to complain about it or anything...I'm curious as to what people find attractive about it (other than the fact that it's a Rolex :D ). And to see if there's anyone else that agrees, or I'm just legitimately insane.

You are not the only one.

What is your Rolex of choice then?

My favorites are the recently replaced Polar Explorer and the GMT. Admittedly, the GMT (especially the Coke version) and the Sub do look similar (except for what's on the bezel obviously), so I'm not sure why one does it for me and the other does not. Yep, probably legitimately insane. Oh well.

Not insane IMO. You are probably not a water sport/diving person. That probably why a Sub doesn't tickle your fancy.

Do you happen to be a pilot or like to travel often? Or like to explore new territories?

That's okay, Beeper. My wife think's it's kind of plain, too. She'd much rather see me save toward an Expy II polar.

I've already written about my Sub love this week, so you can find my post in the What's your quintessential rolex thread. But what the heck: I'll blather on some more.
Sometimes you just have an experience with a certain watch, it just clicks. It's the one for you. Sure you love others, and buy others, but there's always that one. Growing up loving all things nautical, and having a loving father who always wore a dive style watch, it just gets into your blood. The watch just turns into more than a time-telling device, but becomes a little totem that grounds you and reminds you of who you are and where you came from. Sounds, hokey I guess.
From an aesthetics standpoint, I love the looks. I love the round white markers on the deep black dial. I love the text on the dial, the way it's arranged, the font used. I love the way the light catches the coin edge bezel.
From a practical standpoint, I love the clear dial, rugged design, and timing bezel especially. I use it all the time on my current diver.

Although I have some of both, I prefer the GMT and that is my normal wear...

To tell the truth, I probably also wear an Exp II more often than the Sub...

But that still doesn't stop me from loving the design, classic rugged looks, history........ and having more than a few in the box..........

Both...(That's probably not a coincedence ) So you're right, that probably is part of it. I'm also a big sailing fan though, so I'm not sure if that's completely it. Along the lines of my strange taste, I really like the YM I, which has a similar 'clean' look as the sub, and I love the DD as well. Oh well. Everyone has different taste obviously...wouldn't be any fun if everyone liked the same watches now would it?

I've always liked the subs, but I can still understand why they don't do it for you. No biggie.

Very fair question - mine just makes me smile when I look at it.

Some folks don't appreciate iconic objects because they're too familiar looking. People can forget or not give full credit to how innovative they were to begin with. Think of Chuck Taylor Converse sneakers or the old Coke bottle or a Sub: truly beautiful and memorable, marrying form with function. A design success story like that is fairly uncommon, actually.

That said, not everyone loves an icon of design. But plenty do.

I've got to say, I tend to agree with the OP. Friends, who are not into Rolex as much as we are but know a little about the brand, say the Sub is a little boring - too monochromatic, and the brushed band doesn't help. The ceramic version adds a little bit to the watch with the larger, ultra shiny bezel. I love the TT version though, it's the next watch on my list!
