Ever pass on a grail in favor of some new infatuation? Did you regret it?

Have any of you saved for a grail watch, and just when you were ready to buy it, ended up making a last minute change to another watch that caught your eye?
Did you regret it?
Just curious.

I like variety at this point to much to have just one grail, it is more fun for me having alot of watches that I like. So in a way I have many grails. I've been side tracked from time to time, however this is fun, it's a hobby and a passion, no reason to have any regrets.

No don't tell me your Rolex is on hold! Are you having trouble finding the right example 16610? Only when I can't find the "one" do I tend to get sidetracked and usually I regret it. Good luck buddy can't wait to see the 16610 on your wrist!

In collecting areas I know, if it's a "grail" it's a grail, and no other can compete with it. So it's a puzzling concept to me. I can't imagine aiming hard at a grail and then choosing Door Number 2 instead; to me that means the "grail" was mislabeled as such.

A quick scan by my eye in reading the new posts, thought it said:

David, I'm not having trouble finding the right 16610 at all. I see plenty of right ones on the sales forum everyday! I'm just not there yet with the $$.

Here's the problem. I've wanted a Sub for so long, have looked at pics of Subs for so long, have bought dive watches that kind of resemble Subs for so long, that in a weird way the Sub has become kind of ordinary. I've gotten all infatuated with Expy II lately, and I've started thinking, "What if I got the Expy II instead of the Sub...would I regret it?" Probably, but I'm curious to know if there are any examples from other members where they did such a thing.
Now that I've typed all that, I don't see how I can pass on my grail, but I'm still curious to know if anyone else has.

We traveled down the same road my friend. I was fortunate enough to get my first sub 14060 a while back and I can tell you that nothing that looks or mimics the sub in anyway can compare to having the real thing. If this is your first Rolex then trust me the feeling you get every time you put this watch on is something I have found only Rolex can give. Something special about it that I can't explain in words.

With that being said I am also a dive watch guy so the Sub being the most iconic dive watch ever created, the legend if you will, is a must have.

After my sub I was infatuated with the explorerII white dial, after trying it on I am glad I never bought it. I think you will regret it if you get the explorerII over the sub. For your first Rolex get your first love, the Submariner will not disappoint. Good luck buddy I am excited for you.

I actually bought my grail, and am seriously considering selling it for some new infatuations. This grail (stainless Daytona) makes me too nervous when I wear it. I'm so afraid I'm going to scratch it. And no one appreciates it for what it is. I could purchase a GMT and a Panerai for the same money and wouldn't be afraid to actually wear those!

Yes, recently. I was reading a Golf magazine on a flight to wherever about a month ago. I saw a Rolex ad with the most beautiful Datejust II, Two Tone, Slate dial with dark green roman numerals. I immediately said "I WANT THAT!!"

Well, I don't live anywhere near where my AD is anymore but I was going there last week on business so I decided I was going to run in there and have him order it. Well, he had one in stock, it was gorgeous, I told him I will take it and come in the next day to pick it up.

There I am, as promised the next day as he is putting out the all green Sub-C, I aske him to see that. He says that it is an allocated watch, I put it on, I put the DJII on my other wrist and decide I need the Sub-C Kermit even more so I wind up having him ship it to me in Florida (no sales tax that way).

I'm not sure if that is a technical "passed on grail for the flavor of the month" kind of story that you are looking for but I think it's close enough.

You can always go back and get one. Believe it wont disappoint.

That is the watch and perhaps I will one day, in fact you can probably count on it. I do admit thought that I want to retire in the next 3 or so years so spending $10k on a watch may not be the wisest choice right now. :)

My "Grail" has just appeared in the For Sale section.

Alas, I'll have to pass it up.

I don't have a spare £65,000!

Better yet, if we could find £32,500 each we could share it six months about!

No regrets yet but time will tell.....

I relate to this thread in a big way.Just recently put my "Holy Grail" on the back burner,as my "Back-Up Grail" had begun whispering sweet nothings in my ear.The voice got stronger and stronger until I just HAD to do something about it!

I had a chance to buy a Omega Speedmaster 376.0822 about 16 months ago

My contract was up for renewal at the time & I wasn't sure if it was going to be renewed plus xmas was coming up. I decided to pass

About 2 weeks later I got renewed for 3 months !! Never saw one as good since.

Massive, massive mistake. I've still got the sale advert archived off. Still gets me everytime I think about it

My grail has always been the SS Daytona, which I have finally gotten. But 11 years before I was ready to buy a Daytona, I had my sights set on a Pepsi GMTII as my first Rolex. I had acquired a VERY poor reproduction on an overseas trip (RQLEX???), I was checking it out in stores, trying it on, getting myself ready to accept going into debt to get it. And then, one day, I saw the ExplorerII and it was love at first sight. A few months later, my local AD had just gotten one in on the day I visited (they were very difficult to get back then). I walked out with it and never looked back. It has been my daily companion until his brother entered our family, last month.

Sometimes I think I missed something in never getting a GMTII, but I've never regretted the decision to get the ExplorerII. Now that I've gone from enthusiast (one Rolex) to collector (two Rolexes), maybe I'll revisit that decision.

please to see another member enjoying the Exp II. It's my favourite Rolex of all times

Do not ever give up on your grail. It took me 32 years to acquire my Sub 16610. It is a long story. I do not feel like typing it, and I do not think anyone would want to read it.

Hold out for your grail and do not let yourself get side tracked.

Well I sold my first Rolex and 18k Date to buy a boat. Now I don't have either one... I do have a "new to me" 18238 Preisdent arriving tomorrow, so I have rectified the situation. :-)

I was all up for the no date Sub that I'd lusted after (massive Bond fan) but allowed myself to pass it by as two colleagues had similar (mistake).

Then I set my heart on a GMT Pepsi and was about to buy when my AD talked me into the GMT Ceramic. I was unsure of it for about 6mths (something nagged) until I brushed the bracelet and now I truly love it.

I'll still be getting a Pepsi and definately a no date sub down the line though

They tried to talk me into New And Shiny stuff when I bought my 14060! I think because I had seriously considered more expensive stuff from brands other than Rolex they realised money wasn't the deciding factor for me and they wanted to part me from as much as they could!

When I started yelling Bah Humbug at the top of my voice they relented and let me buy the 14060m!
