hi, my son has decided he loves rolex, probably gets this from his dad. In the last few years he has lost 1 watch, and the other watch i bought him a G shock, as this was cool amongst 13 years old, is so banged up now. He plays rugby, surfs etc. Am I silly for even considering buying him a older steel rolex, likes my wifes tells me ?. He will likely leave it under his towel, whilst he surfs at the beach, play various other sprorts with it on during school lunch. Would you buy your boy a rolex at this age ?

Well I'm 12 and I have a few nice watches, but since I play sports I'm not aloud to wear my rolex or panerai to school. I've also never lost a watch before, maybe wait till your son turns 16.

In my opinion at that age you were spot on with the G-Shock.

It depends. My thirteen year old son could definitely be trusted to treat one with the same care I do.

But his attitude is "Why would I ever want a watch?". Not an unreasonable question, since his iPhone is always within reach, and I didn't wear a watch for fifteen years until I caught the Rolex bug.

But it will grow on him.

13 is abit young, appreciation of the watch isn't something u just pick up... i am 20 and if my parents were to buy me one GOD i would definitely take it given the option at age 13

... maybe if you let him wear it under your guidance? special occasions? dinner? around the house. And as he grows older become more lenient. Though then again if i had a son that wanted a rolex at age 13 i'd tell him to go back to bed cause thats where dreams are made.

I used to wear my fathers submariner when I was 13 because it was water proof. I surfed for years with it on. I knew about what a rolex was but I didn't appreciate it. I just wore that one to the beach because it was waterproof. My 11 year old son likes watches always asking me about them. I let him wear my submariner on NATO but only when we go out for dinner or somewhere special. I am teaching him wrist presence ie not banging it against walls desks etc he is great with it. But there is no way I would give him one yet. I have a Seadweller put aside for him when he earns it.

My 14 year old son is extremely interested in watches, and could likely teach a large percent of theis forums members how the watch parts work, complications, etc. I would still not get him a rolex or other expensive watch yet. As others have mentioned he needs to earn it more. If he gets that now what do you get him for graduation, a tourbillon ?
Kids need to be brought down to real life a bit.

Why not get him a similar "look" watch, like an Invicta or some of the Seiko automatic models (whatever did happen to my Seiko Diver???) and see how he does with it. They're still very good timepieces, but not built to the same standards. If he can take good care of one of those, then you'll have less to worry about.
