Stay base w/ the manual wind for the best bang for your buck.

Luminors 000, 005, 111, 112. If you like the TI case 176, 177.

Rads 210, 183

Manual wound pieces are more in line with the Panerai history and they have historically held their values better than the autos. (incase you sell later)

With that said, my first was the 312 as I wanted a date and auto for a daily piece. My 2nd was a manual.

But despite all that, buy what you like! PAMs are unique in their allure.

Thanks for that Phil

Manual wound watches are quite old fashioned right? But I can see where you’re coming from as I suppose the originals would have been manual.

How long would a manual wound watch take before its energy was depleted?

Thank you

hmmm, for $5500...

312 is tops but possible
I'm partial to the 210, 111, 000, 243

There are also some Ti's like 61 with sweet brown dials

What do you like? Rad, Lum, Sub

I believe the base historics have 40+ hours of power reserve. Mik and some of the other guys can give you a better idea.

There is something about winding the piece. I do it to my all my watches in the rotation irregardless of auto/manual. I don't use a winder.

Have fun Jonathan! and looking forward to you on the "dark side"

If you like clean dial, then 000 for Luminor and then 210 for Radiomir.

If you like simple with sub second hand, then 005 for Luminor and then 183 for Radimor.

Have you tried any of them yet?

Take your time and try some on. Most love the Lum a ton, but you never know. I've fallen head over heals for the Rads.

A lot of great references out there. As mentioned, it's best to try them on. See what makes you smile. As a 1st, I'd choose from the historic collection.

Good luck!

Models with a second hand do, those without don't.

Also, bear in mind that these models do not hack i.e. the hands keep moving when you pull the crown out to set the time.

Cheers Psmith

How do you set the time if the hands keep moving? Or is that just the second hand?

000 or 111?

Jon

I suppose the answer is 'approximately', although you can hack these 6497/8 movements in a fashion by manipulating the crown and applying 'reverse pressure'. I set mine quite quickly, so that the hands don't move on too far. I don't think anyone buys a historic Base or Marina model and worries too much about highly accurate time-keeping, although the movements are certainly capable of it.

Of these two models, I prefer the 111, mainly because I like to have the second hand.
