Help, should i buy submariner or panerai?

okay...so I've saved up now to buy my next watch which I thought was my original sub-date I sold 2 months ago but want to buy back from the guy I sold it to. Talked to him and he wants to sell it back to me..which is great. BUT now I want a panerai pam050. Since I have the Rolex Ive always wanted, the YM I guess I want something different...but I really miss the sub. I want both but can't have both. Reason I want the pam 50 is because I had the 104 and 111 before and they were too big on my wrist. The pam050 being 40mm is just right, plus I didnt like the strap feel of the other pams and with the pam050 being steel bracelet its perfect. I do like the rubber straps tho, for outdoor and swimming and stuff. I guess its kind of cool how you can change straps. Anyways, I love both watches. The look of the sub I like better, prettier watch than the pam. But the pam is different. I sold the sub to fund the YM and also because I really got tired of seeing subs everywhere thats why I bought the YM which I wanted from the beginning but couldnt afford then. And I originally sold my pams because 1st too big and 2nd not worth the money because of no steel bracelet, so expensive for a leather strap watch. So which watch do I get ? Help me decide guys and thanks.

if you visit a panerai forum they will tell you to buy the pam

Myself, having owned both pams and rolexes I would buy the sub hands down
But you need to decide based on what YOU like

I would opt for the Sub, but that Panny on that bracelet makes it stand out so much better than the strap models!!

can not agree with that buddy
For me a Pam stands out only on a nice vintage strap
Their bracelets are weak and bad looking IMHO

Weak and bad looking? What are you saying? That bracelet costs more than an Oyster bracelet and is probably stronger too - superbly constructed. I know 'cause I've seen and held one in person.

I was toying with a Panerai also. They look good but I kept saying to myself, "is this a fad?"

I'm still not clear why I would spend $5k for a Panerai. This isn't a slam on them but other than being worn by the italian navy and Sylvester Stallone , I'm not sure of it's claim to fame.

50 years from now, people will still recognize and appreciate a Rolex. I wasn't and still am not sure if they would feel the same way about a Panerai.

Never having been a fan of the YM, I'd say get the Sub and the Pannie and ditch the YM. But that's just me.

Personally I'd go for the sub, better looking (imho) classic design. Pam's are quite the rage at the moment, but that might fade and I think even the 40mm would wear quite big.

So sell the YM and get your sub back and then get a GMT-II while you still can!

That (to me) seems like the logical order of "smart" watch collecting.

Like it or not: Rolex is a stronger foundation to build a collection on.

While I'm not a great fan of Rolex sport models, I would choose the Submariner without hesitation. Furthermore, it's my opinion, as well as that of many others, that Rolex quality is simply unmatched. Panerai is closer associated with current, popular fashion trends rather than the prestige and elegance that accompanies the Rolex brand.

I would go for the Sub. While Panerai's have excellent lume and readable dials in general, which is great, I tend to think of the Submariner as being a base watch that you know you can count on, is reasonable to fix and maintain price-wise compared to other luxury brands (if you need to even, they are so reliable) and is one of those icons of design and prestige that is always appropriate to wear not just in social situations but is also tough in "real life" environments. You just don't have to worry about it or baby it beyond being reasonable. Panerai's are excellent watches too and many here like them. But in my mind, I see it as a watch you would own in addition to your Rolex. That's just my conception, for what it's worth. Either way you decide to go, you will have a very nice watch.

AFter having both, I would have to say go with the PAM50. The bracelet is a better quality, the watch case fits better on the wrist and the lumination is 10X better than the Rolex. Also, the packaging that comes with the PAM is outstanding. Nice wood box, COSC certificate. The Rolex will be easeier to re sell though and retain more of it's value. Also, the PAM is unique, you will not see too many people wearing.

Very true GG, the Panerai bracelets are better than any I have owned, the only on par in dive watches was probably the IWC.

And as for which one, I made that choice long ago and never looked back and have never been happier. Gotta get what makes ya smile.






I hope the fad does die so some of the pieces that I want will come down in price.

Well, I have to say that I love the TT Sub. It's a beautiful watch....but you really need to buy what would make you happy. Surely one of those jump out more than the other. That's for you to decide. Good luck and happy hunting. Let us know when you decide, with pics.

I insist that panerai means straps straps straps. If you want a bracelet just buy a Rolex

Rolex has been around since the start of the last century, and shows no sign of slowing. In other words, when you pay 5K plus for a watch, Rolex is likely to still be around to service your investment 25 years from now.

Also, the Sub design is:

(i) comfortable
(ii) classic looking and suitable with casual or business attire
(iii) tough as nails, with a long history of diving and exploration

The Rolex uses an in-house made movement, the Pam a mass-produced ETA movement which, according to a review I read by a master watchmaker, does not stand a chance in a one-on-one comparison. That said, the Pam is a beautifully made watch of high quality which would have a very welcome place in my collection, so pick what smiled at you..........

If Rolex would only make a comfortabel bracelet (IWC, Blancplain, Ulysse Nardin) and make better lum on the hands and do a little better job finishing and rounds out the edges of the case I would agree that Rolex is the best.
