Does anyone else find the allure of the 39mm Explorer intoxicating?
I don't know why, but I find the 39mm Explorer VERY cool...
I put it on last week at my AD - big mistake. It's a good size, it's got no date so it's easy to set, it's all brushed INCLUDING the bezel (unlike the previous 36mm Expy which I helped buy for my brother), it sits low, it looks classic! I love my Milgauss and the new 39mm Expy reminds me of a lower profile, easier for daily use Millie. Such a nice watch, didn't think I'd like it so much. Anyone else feel the same?

I LOVE that watch. Put it on an olive NATO and you have one of the most amazing and inconspicuous watches out there!

the bezel is polished if I'm not mistaken ( I own one but am not sure exactly what constitutes the bezel ) In any event, it is mostly brushed, but not all.

I have always loved the original 36mm Explorer due to the simple and timeless design, but felt it a bit too small for my wrist. When the 39mm Explorer was announced, I knew my perfect watch had arrived.
Upon handling the watch the quality of the new bracelet really struck me. I also love the that the dial is matte, adds something special IMO. I know some hate the solid numbers, but I also like these as it looks reminiscent of the black-out model (one of the best looking watches ever) in certain lighting. The watch I own now? The first 39mm Explorer I ever tried on, walked out of the store with it the same day. |

I have been torn between a Milgauss and the 39mm Exp. How did the Exp wear on the wrist?

I wouldn't trade my GV for one... but I would like to add a 39 Expy to my collection for sure.

Very well. Just like the Milgauss but lower and less top heavy.

Polished
The bezel IS polished, but one thing I noticed that is way cool: the case back is completely brushed. Every case back I have seen has had the polished 'slanted ring' (if that makes any senesce), but the expy39 is ALL stealth!!!

Liked it when i tried it on. Too many others in the way at the time but I still think of it. It had a great feel and I was drawn to its simplicity.

I bought mine in mid-April, under some duress as my 16-year old chrono Raymond Weil died, and didn't get to do a lot of research prior to replacement.
Wanted a serious watch. Wanted a COSC-certified movement. Was disappointed in the "glitz" of Breitling. Got 39MM Explorer 1 from AD before price increase with a good discount. Really liked satin finish of band, simplicity of watch, sturdiness. Friend (a true friend indeed) let me borrow his two-tone blue-faced Submariner to try for a weekend. Truly a beautiful watch, BUT, a bit too showy for day-to-day office (I am in sales) use. AD wore an Explorer II in white, almost went there, but like the pure elegance and wrist feel of Explorer I. Just posted in another thread that the 3132 movement in the Explorer 1, in my small sample-space at least, is running only -.5 seconds per week. Maybe that changes as the watch "breaks-in". For me, the perfect Rolex, but I don't own a yacht, don't dive and am not a President! Others may beg to differ. Under-rated option, but to each their own! Can't say enough good things about. Oh, and the lume! I wear mine to bed, and it lasts 8-hours easy with a charge before bed. A solid choice! |

The 39mm Explorer is the nicest, purist Rolex made. IMO.

Should add one comment. I was intoxicated by the major second-hand. Thought when I went into it, "chrono or no-mo". The AD and I both originally thought "black Daytona".
For me, the elegance of pure-time representation is best expressed in the Rolex line by this model. Hopping off soap-box now. In violent agreement with Art 1 (above), but again, to each their own! |

I love the 39 mm Explorer. As others have said, I am pretty sure the bezel is polished, but for me this is good. I also love the white gold 3, 6, 9.
My first Rolex was ultimately narrowed down to the Explorer or the Milgauss. I went with the Milgauss, but the Explorer is still something I crave. |

I own a 36mm explorer. I haven't tried on a 39mm but in side to side pictures I think the 36mm has better lines - it looks as if the bracelet is the same width so the 36mm transitions smoothly from bracelet to lug to case whereas the 39mm bulges out too quickly.
It's definitely an understated watch, I don't think anybody has noticed straight up its a Rolex yet. Mostly they just notice its shiny and when they ask what it is the next question is always "is it real?" |

The EXP 39 sneaks up on you...IMO, it's THE classiest, most elegant Rolex sport watch. A pure and simple watch with style. It's sort of an "un Rolex" Rolex, which certainly adds to the allure for me. It's a contrarian Rolex, for sure, and IMO just beautiful.
I totally agree with what Art1 and Boothroyd have said above. Last edited by warrior; 5 July 2011 at 10:50 AM.. Reason: addition |

Yeah current 40mm a bit too big for my wrist, even 38mm is better.
