Hello to all! I am the recent reciepient (sp) of an older Rolex from my grandfather. I will post pics soon. The crystal is in need of replacement, and it could use a cleaning and a polish. I am unsure of where to get the work done. I live in the Toledo Ohio area, and upon calling the Manhattan office, I learned that a local jewler is authorized. Should I send it to a RSC or will the rolex refered jeweler be fine?

Your help is greatly appreciated.

Welcome to TRF.

It's amazing how much abuse an older crystal can take and still be polished out.

An authorized Rolex shop can do a fine job at a fraction of the cost of an RSC in half the time (or less). Depends on you and your watch.

I will post some pics after I have it the watch polished and cleaned. The watch has had an interesting story. It has traveled to South America, Europe, Pacific Islands, Asia and all across the U.S. My Grandfather purchased it many years ago(before I was born and I am now almost 32!). A few years back he developed Alzehiemers and dementia. My mother died in an accident a few years ago, and my Aunt and my sister and I have been caring for him. He was recently moved to a fully locked unit. When he heard he was moving, he started packing his things into garbage bags(no one knows why he chose bags). He forgot that his trash and valuables were all in garbage bags, so he set it all out to be taken. The Rolex was in one of those bags, and thank god I got to the bag before the trash hauler did. He said he threw it out because it didnt work anymore, not realizing that he hadn't wound it in some time.
Needless to say, the family said that I should take it since I rescued it, and now I am a very proud owner of a very sentimental timepiece.
I am so far unsure as to what model it is, but I am researching that, and hope to resotre the watch to a new looking apperance. Word in the family is that he was religious about having it serviced every 5-6 years, and that it was serviced recently.

Welcome to TRF, Brandon. Sounds like you have yourself a wonderful family momento (although it's unfortunate about the circumstances that brought it about).

In answer to your question, a Rolex certified techician should be able to fix your watch at less cost and in less time than RSC.

How about some before and after pics.

Hi Brandon, welcome aboard!

That's a wonderful story about your Grandfather's watch. As others have said, any authorized Rolex repair facility can service it. If it was mine I wouldn't hesitate to send it to one of the three U.S. Rolex Service Centres. Too significant a watch.

While its not a bubbleback or a daytona, it is rather modest and reserved timepiece. Once I take some pics I will post it to see if anyone with a sharp eye can identify it.

Welcome to TRF. Sorry to hear about the tragic loss of your mother and the current condition of your grandfather. My grandmother also recently passed due to Alzheimers, but it was best that the good Lord has taken her since she was suffering.

Do post a photo of your grandfather's watch especially with is long history.

Fascinating story!

That Rolex must be highly treasured by you. Therefore, I'd definately take it to an official RSC, just to be on the safe side

I have heard gruesome stories from the "craftmanship" carried out by non Rolex people tampering with Rolex watches
