What was it that first captured your interest in Rolex watches?

For me it was a former boss. I had him and his wife over for dinner. I was young at the time and never really knew anything about Rolex watches or cared for that matter. Then during dinner after a couple drinks out of nowhere he said in his European accent "I may not where gucci shit or I may not wear Versace shoes but in the morning when I get dressed and put my jeans on I wear Rolex.... imagine the most akward silence then my girlfriend says oh well can we see it and then he prouldly takes it off and it goes around the table. It was a black face SS datejust. Funny thing was that while at work a few weeks later. I was talking to his wife (she worked with us as well) and she says the rolex he has is a knock off and that he bought it for 50 bucks while on vacation.

I bought a Datejust the year I turned 30. I was looking to upgrade from a Seiko, decided I could spend $600, and started looking. That $600 turned into the downpayment on my $2900 DJ.

For me, I was a young Soldier in Iraq. They had a bunch of fake Rolex watches and I admit, I bought many of them. All of them broke in a week and decided to get the real thing. By the end of deployment, I had bought an Explorer II and DJ and they were patiently waiting for me at home.

It was something about having something nice as a reward for an accomplishment. A crown for every achievement is what goes around this forum. I actually believe in it.

Same here...

I can remember bein 16, and my father wore a DAY-DATE and mumsee wore a gold ROLEX cocktail watch.

That was back in the 70s...

My dad was an oil exec in ol Siam and mum worked for a prominant law firm. So their circle was often knee deep in ROLEX; lots of DDs, DJs, Subs and GMTs. At one point pops had both a white and yeller gold DDs.

To me, seein all this was fascinating...

What struk me was firstly these were autos. And all the shaking of wrists, and bracelets makin an all too familiar rattle.

Second was the fluted bezels that captured every ray of light.

Then, that crystal protruding the mid casing and on it a bubble, a cyclops, very ornate lika christmas ornament.

Next was the president bracelet. Gold, all gold, man, lots of gold.

[Incidently, at the time, my first "auto" was - wait for it, JJ, are you payin attention from "up there", yup, a gold tone RADO DiaStar ~ !]

First heard of Rolex at age 19 (1967) when reading James Bond books. Fell in love with Rolex in 1970 when I saw a gold President in a shop window. I think the price was $1,300, a sum I never imagined in my life that I would ever have to spend on a watch!

25 years ago, I imagined the watch I wanted and set out to find it: simple, unembellished, understated, stick markers, stainless steel, watertight, date function, metal bracelet, superb fit and finish. Wasn't looking for a Rolex at all. Figured I'd find a Seiko for $200. Visited watch stores for months.

Wound up buying a new Datejust for a lot more than $200. Still wear it all the time.

Same here: reading Bond by Mr Fleming with Rolex being mentioned as 007`s watch... reliable and trusted, that`s what it`s all about
(I forget which novel I read first... I bought a few within a short period and got hooked with the novels and the movies, and glad I did) Got a TT DJ as my 1st,
now have a SD classic Z series will never let it go it`s the perfect one, the DSSD is too big.

I suppose I always remember thinking having a Rolex signified "making it,"as lame as that really is. The SubC was was love at first site. I couldn't shake it and I noticed every rolex on any wrist for months. The "lore" of Rolex equalling success is really what got me into it but the quality workmanship and high end nature of the SubC kept me interested.

I'm 14 and I recently got a Rolex Oyster Perpetual Date 15210 from my father after pestering him for months!

I was interested in the Rolex movement and how I can just shake the watch to move it. I have worn it for about half a year and I'm still fascinated at the reliability of the watch!

I always loved chronometers so I guess the next watch I would be getting is the Daytona.

I knew Rolex was a highly regarded watch, my brother had owned one and he spoke very well about them. I wanted a mechanical watch, not an electronic device, and I wanted a sporting style. Rolex advertisements had informed me about how rugged and what a piece of engineering excellence they stood for in the watch world.

Rolex seemed to tick all the boxes. At the time I don't think I really realised how good Rolex watches were and the rich history they had in decades before.

Sometimes I guess it's not until you really look into something very deeply that you fully appreciate what you've got.

They say you get warmed to it.

That was the case for me. I was looking for a good watch after wearing quartz sports watches all my life. I looked and I looked, I looked at low tier, entry luxury level and mid level. I got around looking at Rolex and got repulsed by it thinking how such ugly designed watches for oldies are selling for that much.

I looked further at all sorts of brands and watches, ultimately I looked back at Rolex by chance and by that time have read quite a bit about different manufacturers including Rolex on the net. I found WUS and TRF and learned even more about Rolex and it started getting warmed to me. The once perception of an ugly designed watch turned the other end of the spectrum bearing in mind its history, its movement, its corporate sophistication and how its run and dictated by its founder long since his passing. Its true they say a physical object does not impart much to the mind by itself until all aspects of it be it cultural, corporate, history, heritage, engineering etc. merges with it as one to emerge as something desired by an individual.

I nearly got a PO which I now also own as my first but I slept on it for weeks and finally decided my first will be a sub and went ahead with it. At the time the thought of having a second one never once crossed my mind as that would be absurd. Like many here I then subsequently got my hands on a second one, then a third, a fourth and a fifth...
