Seadweller Demand - Question

Hey guys, just a question regarding the used market for 16600 seadwellers.

I have the means to purchase now, but could probably do this more comfortably in a few years' time.

Thing is, obviously there are many around now - I've secured an offer from a reputable dealer for a recently serviced F serial at 5300.
I would hate to have missed the boat by waiting.

How do people see the market looking in a few years?

I'd buy that F all day without fail. On discontinued pieces like the SD and the Sub, prices go one way: up.

An F serial should be a 16600.
The SD are slowly commanding a higher price.
It's up to you, but I think the offer is fair for a freshly serviced SD!

IMHO they are not rare and they are plentiful especially the 16610 submariners (over 20 years production). Price is based on age, condition and what the market is willing to pay. There will always be 1 for sale and I disagree that these are going up in prices based on what I see at shows etc. NOS late model ones are scarce and they are at a premium though.

Bottom line, Rolex prices in general keep going up, which equivilates to pre-owned watches going up as well. Everybody can argue either way, but with inflation and a strong Rolex market(as always), yes, they will go up in price. If it's due to the rarity of any particular model is up for debate, but personally the combination of inflation and the SD being discontinued, they will go up in price.

My suggestion, if you want it, get it now. $5300 ain't a bad price-tag at all, and coming from personal experience, the SD is an absolutely amazing timepiece. My favorite of all the watches I've owned. Although, I haven't owned a Deep-Sea just yet. ; )

IMHO - in couple years for the same series and same condition will demand more then 5300.

If you love the SD go get it! is a classic, you won't go wrong.

I guess still being very young, I'm keen to keep cash in hand for whatever life throws at me... And I guess cash in aus is worth a bit more than the us, as our interest rates aren't zero!

Have to agree since the 16610 and the 16600 was introduced in 1988/9 there has only been very very minor changes. And over those 20 plus years should be millions of them about and all basically the same except for minor cosmetic details.

Do you want a watch now, or do you want to wait and maybe (or maybe not) safe some money?

If you want to safe money, buy a Swatch...

I couldn't wait, and who knows what in 5 years time will be....

I can't believe that there are millions of SDs out there over the life of the watch much less the last 20 years. SDs not produced in Sub numbers
The SD will increase in price on the used market faster than the Sub
IMHO. That said don't buy any modern Rolex because you hope or fear the price is going to increase. Buy it to love & wear when you can afford it.

Tough to tell how the market will dictate the SD's pricing.

If you have the means to buy it now, go for it. Wear it.....enjoy it!

I have always considered the SD to be THE Rolex diver and the one Rolex I wanted in my collection. Now discontinued, I suspect its value has no way to go but up. Without a Cyclops to obscure the striking dial combined with a comfortable wrist presence, the 16600 is as good as it gets among Rolex sport models.

And the price you were quoted makes for an easy decision.

yeah to OP, buy it, you won't regret it, when I bought mine the DSSD just came out, I was debating between them, I figure I can always get the DSSD later on, and recently I got the DSSD, but my SD is still my favourite

That is a pretty solid price. Rolex SD was my 2nd Rolex and I have no regrets. I can tell you what, couple years ago it wasn't going for 4,000+.

I hold more Aussies than USD, and I thank you for the return.

The watch is nice and fun to wear. It is heavy and you feel its presence. I've had sales people at AD's insist it was a Submariner (???!!!), and I have to show them the date and the helium release valve to educate them. It has quite a history, with the precursor dating back to 1960 or so with the Trieste. It wasn't popular when it was in production, so you won't see as many as you'll see of the Submariner. It was a real "tool watch", used by divers and professionals when it was more affordable, and I like that aspect of the watch. If you like the date function without the cyclops - and I do - the watch is the one for you.

The cyclops magnifier is one of the more recognizable Rolex features, so if you want people to really know you have a Rolex on your wrist you should consider a Submariner with date function. The Sea Dweller should hold its value, but that depends on what the younger generation fancies. I'd bet that in the short term it will increase in price based on USD. If a commodity crash takes down the Aussie and NZD, you can buy another and pay for your trip down under.

I'd also suggest going for it now if it's 'do-able' financially. Prices will only increase over time.

I have an A-Series with lug holes that I find hard to take off. It runs consistently at -2sec/day and is very comfortable. I would buy it.

I mine, bought it because I liked it; the fact that it seems to hold value well is a bonus. I'd say buy what you like FIRST, then consider the other factors. No sense having a watch you don't like but may appreciate, there are other better investment vehicles than a watch.

I had 2 - one for routine wear and the other for collection - plastics still on and open card. Sold the daily wearer and kept the collection piece. Still miss the daily wearer - should never have sold it.

My 2 cents is buy it as soon as you can. Great watch and solid investment.

Well perhaps in 30-50 years the only difference in any SD since 1988 is hardly worth a mention a few minor fonts and a different case stamp. So would doubt if it will be on a avid Rolex collectors must have list.
