I would ask for a pix set to a certain time and date to verify that they are not stolen photos, but the watch looks ok.

He's a new seller, that's another red flag - but it can be overcome with some communication.

The fact that he's a well-known photographer means nothing.

So for example..."ask him to set the watch to 0700 and date at 7?"

and

then talk to him - get a phone number from him and make sure he's legit? what types of things do you make sure to talk about when communicating on the phone?

Exactly, the fear is that he is stealing photos from some website and using them to create his listing - mind you I'm not accusing him of that, just that it happens a lot.

So, have him send one pix with his eBay name written on a piece of paper and the watch on the paper set to 4:28 on the 13th. Then you can be pretty sure he physically has the watch, as opposed to stealing photos or sub-contracting the sale of someone elses watch.

Then get his name, phone number, and address. If he can't do that, I wouldn't pursue it. That's a bare minimum of info. Call him and talk to him and ask some random basic questions, like 'if you loupe the watch, where would I see the most scratches?' or 'has the case even been opened to your knowledge?' or 'how many owners have had it?'. Generally from a short conversation you can get a sense of trust and honesty; however, there is no absolute guarantee.

Good luck, the SD is a great watch!

Also, so far, he's only bought a $79 gold bar from eBay and now he's selling a multi-thousand dollar watch.

This seems a bit odd, still could be legit of course, but a bit odd.

Sometimes, a scammer hijacks an eBay account and lists a big ticket item. You might be dealing with the scammer instead of the original eBay account holder.

Its a good thing I got his hotmail account from his email. I will contact him by other means other than the hotmail and ebay account and get a phone number from him and ensure he is really selling the watch.

Good point I didnt think of that.

Well, the listing has been removed, I'd guess it was a scam and perhaps the scammer is reading this thread.
