I have been searching through the forum about Datejust, the one model that has me slightly confused is the one I own the 162xx model. I am unsure when production started and when it ended. I have heard the it began in 1988, however I have seen a R serial 1988 Datejust 16013 on TRF. I have also heard that production stopped sometime in the 2000's some have said as late as 2008. Does anyone know when production started and stopped for the 162xx DJ? Here is an early 16233 from 1990;

I took a look and it does not seem to be very accurate, it says that the L serial number was made in 1989 and in 1990 it switched to the E serial number. I have a list of Rolex serial numbers from Complete Price Guide to Watches 2008 and it shows the the L serial number was produced from 1989 to 1990.5. Also according to the clasp code which is an O the watch is a early 1990 model. I was just wondering when the 162xx model started and ended production?

I found this for the 16xxx, it said 162xx was made until the "D"

U 1997 (Aug)
A 1998 (Nov)
P 2000 (Jan)
K 2001 (Sep)
Y 2002 (Sep)
F 2003 (Sep)
D 2005 (Apr)
Z 2006 (May)
M 2007 (Aug)

Thats good to know so the 162xx models ran until 2005, and the 1162xx models started in 2006. The start date is the only question, I have heard that it was 1988. I took a look at the R serial numbers in my book and it shows that it was produced from 1987 3/4 to the end of 1988. Could it have been that the R serial 160xx were produced at the end of 1987 and the new 162xx started production in 1988.

My L serial was produced in 1989, confirmed from 3 different places.
