Absolute Newbie Needs Help
I've got a few 'fine' watches, an Omega Seamaster, Seiko Ananta Spring Drive and an IWC Pilot Chrono.
So now I'm looking a acquiring a Rolex. I'm interested in Divers but a bit confused. I'm trying to get a handle on the differences between the Submariner and Deepsea (other than one seems to have a magnifier over the date and the other doesn't). And then I see reference to Sea Dweller as another model but don't see it on the Rolex website. As I look at the official Rolex website it's hard to compare them as the website in it's desire to be 'cool' is really making unwieldy and doesn't seem to work correctly in Safari. I've looked through the general information articles on this website, but what I guess I really need is a Rolex 101 article or maybe Rolex for Dummies. Can anyone point me to a good reference on the web? Thanks! |

I saw those files but re-reading them helps... so the real difference is that the Deep Sea is designed for deeper use?
(I don't expect my watches to be more than 10-20ft down, but it's nice not to have to worry about getting them wet, in the pool, etc. I haven't needed my helium relief valve on my Omega yet nor ever will) |

The Deep Sea is a HUGE watch / different design elements / different technology Vs. the Sub. Did you look at the size specs? Yes. It's meant for diving to depths you will never reach.
Have you tried these watches on? The differences make themselves apparent very quickly. |

You probably need to visit an AD and check them out personally. You be able to tell real easily after seeing them in person.

The 40mm Sea-Dweller has now been replaced by the larger, heavier and more expensive 43 mm Deepsea Sea-Dweller.
The new version has a deeper dive rating (12,800 ft versus 4,000 ft previously), ceramic bezel and superior bracelet fitted with the new Glidelock clasp that enables small adjustments to the bracelet's length. Because of its size and weight, it has stirred controversy among Rolex fans, some of whom don't like it. Best to try it on yourself and see if it's a comfortable fit on your wrist. You could also consider the new Submariner (rating: 1,000 ft) which also has a ceramic bezel and an upgraded bracelet. |

I just got a Deep Sea...
And i love it. I am a big boy, 6'3" and 200 something and I am used to wearing large watches and it works great for me. But it did take a few weeks for me to get used to the height, as it does stand very tall on your wrist. Try them on in person and the decision will be much easier. I believe that I am in the minority with the size of the DSSD (Deep Sea Sea Dweller) and how I enjoy the large size. I have only been down to 7000 feet below sea level on a casual dive but you never know, you may need that extra league or two!:)

I am no diver. Just making fun of the ridiculous depth rating.
