For Diehard Vintage Fans only!

We just had the prettiest DRSD contest so here's one in another direction.

Poll is not meant to offend. Just for fun to see if any of you find some of these models "esthetically challenged".

The new Datejust/DateDay is far uglier than the models listed above. IMHO.

You mean the 41mm models? I agree they don't look so great.

With the Brand taking a turn towards New Money / Power / Macho-styled Watches, I could not agree more with this poll. I could also agree that there are quite a few ugly vintages out there and would be equally happy to participate in such a poll. Let the games begin / Mesdames et Messieurs, Faites vos jeux!

It is a tough call, the Yachtmaster or Deep Sea - I see those two are leading the poll too.

I'd say the Deep Sea.

X2! So who's going to start the ugly vintage poll? There are so many, where would we even start?!

I've also seen that the Milgauss, Explorer 1 and Airking are not too popular too on the attractiveness front though they do have some following.

I was guess the poll is not 100% exhaustive, LOL

Here is a parade of the candidates for the Miss Esthetically Challenged Rolex Pageant:

Yacht Master 44mm Rose Gold and Steel:

Gold GMT w/ Green dial and yellow insert:

DeepSea 44mm:

Sub Green dial green insert:

Explorer II Orange hand 42mm:

While I don't believe that any of these are necessarily "ugly", the YMII is just a little "too much" in my humble opinion.

It just looks like the most "un-Rolex" of the bunch...

But again, just my humble opinion...

That's a good way to put it. I guess most of these are not necessarily completely hideous but they're just not what constitutes Rolex pedigree and understated elegance IMHO. But then again, Rolex does sell every watch they make so there are fans of these watches out there...

x2 My thing is that people have different tastes and none of the watches, except the E2, is tasteful to me. However, my tastes, as well as the tastes of others, will most likely change in time and I suspect that my opinions will follow.

Looks like the YM is the clear "winner" by a longshot. Pretty much what I was expecting as IMHO it has a busy dial, huge case, and major bling factor.

Pdoukas, you have a point. However, I think that this can swing one way and then the other. I actually had a DeepSea which was an impulse purchase when it first came out. I thought the watch was great initiallly (curved crystal, chromalight luminous, ceramic insert, glidelock). However as I kept wearing it, the initial appeal of these details wore off and I just noticed the huge 44mm diameter, 18mm thickness, and extra lines of superfluous literature on the dial and case. I actually used the watch for diving and was disappointed that Rolex didn't even address an obvious issue: too much reflection/glare off the bottom side of the crystal at too many angles ruins legibility while diving. The luminous intensity of the Chromalight is also too weak.
Although I recognize the technical prowess of a watch that can withstand a depth of "3900m" its too clunky and "show-offy" for a Rolex. A side note on the "3900m", its a marketing figure for the Asian market since the number 4 is bad luck in Asia (the number 4 and the word "death" are written with the same character in certain Asian countries). Imagine a watch for diving that has "Death"on the dial...

Anyway, I digress and this is not a review of the DeepSea. The point is, I unfortunately see the rest of the line of Rolex sports watches following the same trend: large cases, exaggerated dials, in your face details, etc.
IMHO, Rolex is straying off the path of what made Rolex watches great for alot of people: Wearable elegant tool watches that are UNDERSTATED. Personally I think its a bit of a shame for such a great and established brand. Its a Rolex, it doesn't need to scream out loud that its a Rolex!

As they say... beauty is in the eye of the beholder. And the tastes of the beholder may change over time.

The 1655 or Milgauss might have won that "ugliest" poll a few decades ago.

Beauty is in the eye of the beholder. Just because a watch may not be "MY" type, doesnt make it ugly. I would never look at a watch on someones wrist that they worked hard for and spent money on and tell them it was ugly which is what this poll is asking me to do.
I think everyone knows what my vote was and I am glad someone added the pointless poll option so I could vote as well. These watches are not cheap to the average meber here and I think it would be pretty low to say there watch is "ugly"
