I've heard that you can "trade-in" a rolex for an upgrade.
Is this true? I got my Blue TT Sub as a graduation gift a long time
ago and my grandparents never explained anything about it to me.
I was wondering if anyone knows how this works...if of course it's
true.

of course you can trade in.... however, if i were you i wouldnt trade in a graduation gift..especially when it was given by your grandparents...
i think the sentimental value is much greater than the value of the watch itself.

I don't know just what you're referring to by the term 'trade in for an upgrade'. The Rolex Service Centers in the US (all located on the mainland) will do 'servicing', meaning periodic servicing (recommended by Rolex every 5 years or so, but others go for longer periods of time, and that's the topic of a lot of other threads). At such a servicing, you can request things like dial changes and replacement of hands, along with any internal movement parts that need to be replaced. However, Rolex will only swap out new for old what the watch might have come with anyway...in your case, you could trade the blue dial for a black one or a serti model, but you'd be charged the going rate in addition to the charges for servicing the watch. When Rolex does a service, the case and bracelet are also refinished as part of the cost, so the watch really is returned in 'like new' condition, ready to run for another bunch of years.

As for not knowing 'how this works', you don't need a college degree to make a Blue Sub 'work'. You'll be akamai nui with just a brief tutorial on setting the time and date and learning how to spin the bezel. Oahu has a handful of Rolex dealers, and my guess is if you stop into one of them, they'll show you Aloha and give you the brief lesson.

In addition, should you send your watch off to one of the Rolex centers, it will be returned with a spiffy instruction book that will also tell you all you need to know about the care and feeding of your TT Sub.

If you buy the Rolex from certain retailers, they'll let you upgrade this way...

They refund your retail price towards the cost of your next Rolex, providing it costs more than the watch you're trading in.

Depends on the AD. Some will give you a good deal, others will not. Might be better off selling yourslef and the applying towards new purchase.

Of course to me, if the Sub you have was a graduation present from you Grandparents, I would not part with it. You will really really regret it down the road.

There is no finer Rolex out there than one that was given to you as a gift from a loved one, for a special occasion/achievement.

The only thing I would do, if you do not like it, is change the blue dial to a black dial (which I personnally prefer more). That way you still have the same watch with all the sentimental value but it is a little different.

Uhh...Thanks. My two college degrees in Architecture and Structural Engineering thank you as well. As for the hand full of AD's here on Oahu...there are 2...and yes..they have been quite helpful. But I must say that I've learned quite a bit more from this forum and SOME of the really knowledge members here!
Ovbiously there are a few things that we ALL could learn from reading the forum more carefully.

I don't really have any intention of trading it in.
Like you say...It is a graduation gift from my grandparents who've both passed. The sentimental value is much greater than the monetary.
I was just asking because I heard something about it a few years back but
never investigated further.
I've thought about changing the dial and bezel inserts to black in the past.
But the blue is iconic. Everyone knows exactly what it is just by looking at it...if they are familiar with Rolex or not.
The TT is a bit flashy for my personality...but I still love it.

Many dealers will do an upgrade in the sense that they will take your watch as a trade to a more expensive model. If you go from an ss to a tt, they will give you a better deal on the trade. I knew a guy who took his ss watch in, I think it was a GMT, and they offered him 4K credit on it if he bought a tt at mrsp, but 3 k if he bought an ss. Maybe it was this kind of upgrade you had heard of?? Also, I love the black and gold TT sub as well. Maybe you could go with that as an alternative with your grandparents watch. But man, that TT, just rings of the tropics with that gorgeous blue.
