How "vintage" is this TT DJ?
first thread at the Vintage sub forum, so please go easy on me
(no idea on what qualifies as a "vintage".. ) long story short - took some pix of this TT DJ this arvo and would like to find out more info. i have tried to remove the bracelet, but didnt have the right size pin to push into the lug hole... the lug hole seems to be very small. have tried with a needle, but it was abit too difficult - will try to look for a paper clip. is it normal for one side of the spring bar to push in and the other side not so much? will the serial number located at the 6 o'clock end of the case? there also quite alot of gunk... (it was a daily wearer & apparently it was acquired in 1984-ish in Swizterland). so a clean is most likely required anyway, here are some pix, any info/advice would be greatly appreciated thanks & hope the pix are okay |

Its a classic watch of the 80's I would say, acrylic and with a badly streched bracelet.
Make sure that it is still waterproof before you clean it. Being around the 80's and not produced anymore, I would consider it as a vintage. You have to see the serial to make sure, but until then, check the date change, and listen to the pulses of the movement. Fast pulses and fast date change take you to the 80's , non of them takes you to earlier date.

I had a quick listen on the movement, it is indeed fast and quite loud (when compared to other ones IMO). I have looked at the date change yet, I will report back with further info. I will also try to take the bracelet off to see what numbers I can see. How easy is to take off those lug hole bracelets? |

Lug holes are great. They allow you to take of the bracelet very easy and fast.
Hold the watch upside down, as in photo 5. Hold the watch steady and push slightly the end link towards the back. You push from face to back to avoid the end link ears. Use a paper clip, and push from one side, until the pin is out but still held by the lug, ( so it does OT bend ) then, holding the already pushed out pin out of the hole, push the pin from the other side. The bracelet is released You can mask with paper tape the sides of the lugs so you don't mark them ( scratch ), or use a tooth-pick so no harm. Unless you have a very steady hand, and you need no masking. The pin must be pushed in same direction with its axis, otherwise you may enlarge the lug hole.

Eric,
You can check also the date shown on the bracelet. This will give you an indication of production year, though I trust that by now the bracelet is already out !! With some tooth paste and a piece of cotton, you can rub the crystal and take all scratches off, making it "brand new". This is provided that the scratches are not very deep and the crystal is not cracked. I wish you were living next door so I could do all this work for you. Good luck !

"is it normal for one side of the spring bar to push in and the other side not so much?"
Both sides push in equally but one side is probably gunked or corroded. Spray some WD40 or similar and keep pushing. |

Looking again and again, it looks to be a very fine piece, no serious scratches, very good lugs and lug holes, looks unpolished with a nice edges on the bezel. It should be a 14 k TT , this is marked on the bracelet.
Although the pics are not the best, in general, it looks to be a well preserved piece, you are lucky to have it.

thanks guys.
i did manage to remove the bracelet and man oh man..... the amount of gunk inside the end pieces and lugs were bloody "amazing".... now i know exactly why i dont appreciate foreign DNA so, apparently, it is a ref: 16013, 8.6 mill serial number & says J2 on the bracelet - not too sure what all this means to be honest yeah, the pix were taken quickly by an iPhone thanks again for the info guys |

My Sub 5513 is 8,1 and made in 1983, so this should be 1984-85.
This is supported by the J* which is 1985. Check around the J mark to see if it is 14 or 18 k. From the colour I believe it should be 14.

I would say that a TT DJ from the 80's with acrylic would qualify as vintage.
Nice watch dave

Had a quick look, it says 62523H 18 under the J2 code.... What about the White text on the dial as one of the members mentioned? Had a quick look around google image, all I can see is black text... |

So, its a 18 k.
White text was applied to black and midnight blue dials, also on some grey and pink. The normal text was black but the white does not surprise me. The point is that it looks that you have a good watch there that looks that never has been serviced, judging from the, ( to my opinion and from these photos ), unpolished case. Now the next step is to open it !! Have to go to bed now, as its past 12 and I get up at 6 !! We talk again tomorrow !!

Thanks George.
This watch belongs to my dad. It has been his daily watch for as long as I can remember. (it was bought by my grandad in Switzerland in 84/85ish, but I can't quite remember. Will have to ask dad) I don't recall it been serviced and/or polished, so everything should still be original. Dad looks after his things quite well, but this one is showing quite alot of wear... Plus, I think he needs a new watch. I gifted dad a new watch which i have picked up in June and he has been wearing that since. That's why I was able to take the 16013 apart Don't know what I am going to do with the 16013 though... |

Put some on your finger and rub it into the dial in a circular motion. Kind of like waxing a car, but in much smaller circles! Wipe it away with a soft cloth. Repeat the above process until the scratches are removed. Poly watch is also a worthwhile investment.

UPDATE - none at this minute...
a couple of newbie questions - (hope that is okay with the experts) 1. what do i do with the flute bezel and cyclops when polishing the acrylic crystal with toothpaste or polywatch? 2. what can i use to remove the case back? PS - I have contacted William Rice for an estimated quote for a service. is there anything i should do and shouldnt do with this piece? i would like to keep this a original as possible. PPS - the badly stretched bracelet.... what can i expect if i send it to Michael Young for a refub? can anyone please post pix of their before and after pix for a comparison? thanks |

Beautiful watch Eric! I would resist the urge to get it polished when serviced, the patina looks beautiful, and the fact that it's your fathers watch makes it cooler
