I disagree. Otherwise it wouldn't garner such a high price.

One could acquire quite an interesting collection of Explorers if they were so inclined...there are just so many unique options out there. And the good thing about it, generally speaking, is that you could do it for significantly less than a Sub (or whatever) collection.

I could go on eBay right now and list an old shoe for $20K. Doesn't mean it will sell. And even if it did sell, that only means I found one fool.

Read the Hodinkee article (and all of the linked articles). One sold in 2008 for over $20,000. These aren't random numbers...they're driven by the market and the relatively high demand for these great pieces.

The Rolex ref.6429 Commando is a very rare watch, most likely less than a 100 still exist today. A few months back I got to handle one, picked up @ a estate sale for $2.00!! A very neat watch!

Basically it's an air king ....With an interesting dial variant. Is it worth 20k? Not for me.

By that logic a Comex is just a sub/SD with funny writing on it...

A MilSub is just a 5513 with an (often "aftermarket") circle T and possibly funny hands that look more like they belong on an omega...

True! But an ordinary sub fetches more than a regular air king.

Even if this watch were to sell for $20K, it would not prove that rare is equal to desirable.

very cool historical watch from Rolex. Interesting read on the piece too. Thanks for sharing. It seems every week I learn about another Sub of Explorer "variant" out there.

You mean 2 dollar as in TWO dollar?

These ARE desirable. There is a very real market for them. I'm not sure I understand your argument.

Regardless, I think this would be the PERFECT watch for me. I just prefer a watch of a bit larger diameter (39 or 40mm is ideal). Granted, I'd not pay $20,000 for it...but I'd part with $6,000 if it were the "right" model.

So many great watches...so little $.

That may be true, but it does not mean that anything rare is automatically desirable. At no point have I said that THIS watch is not desirable.

Oh. Ok. I guess we're in agreement then.

I didn't realize that someone said that rare automatically equals desirable. I was referring specifically to these watches...the topic of the thread.

Last time I checked, it was permissible to make a post without someone else having posted the opposite.

I don't know what this watch is worth, but I do know I won't be bidding on it.

Easy there. I didn't read back...but when I last posted I thought that someone HAD posted about it. Deep breaths...it'll be OK.

Ok guys,we can go on about this "commando" granted it is a great piece,it`s now 16k,still big money for me that is.Is it worth 16?,with less than 100 pieces made I guess so,anywho it is a serious Rolex collectors piece,if I had 16K to piss away I would buy it.With stipulations on the sale.

You guys have got it wrong. This is a manual wind Oyster, not equivalent to a ref. 5500 Air-King at all (except in size; I think it's a 34mm). It is rare, but I thought worth more on the order of several thousand (if all original), not 16K. But to each his own.

Personally I'd much rather have my 1016s...
