Wow that is truly ridiculous...

Hopefully I've never experienced something like that when I went to hospitals and clinics but I'd be very insulted if it had to happen to me.

The look on the pt's face was that of "astonishment" and "dismay" !

Depends. I see docs play phone tag all day long. If it was a call he was waiting on regarding another patient, I have no problem with an "excuse me, I've been trying to catch this doc about something" and step out of the room. Done it myself a time or two. If the call is about dinner or the next tee time, then it's inappropriat.

Its the modern world where instant communication appears to be deemed to be such a high priority.

How many times have you been in a store about to handover "real" cash and the sales person picks up the phone to a general enquirer who is given preference to an actual in-store "live" customer...... Unbelievable.

Recently, I went into a local restaurant and the strategy appeared to be to tell everyone they had to wait 15 minutes for a table. I went to the bar and phoned the same restaurant to book a table and explained I was in a hurry and was told they had a table there and then and to come along as soon as possible...... Imagine the manager's surprise when I returned from the bar 2 minutes later ready for my immediate booking......

I would say it depends on the point of the consultation. If I was being examined and a doc took a call I would be put out - big time. But during the small talk before and after I suppose - if he/ she was to say quickly "Do you mind, I have to take this, I won't be a moment" it would be OK. Not fine, just OK.

I think it's unprofessional. I don't take calls during class, so I can't understand this doctor's attitude. It disrespectful in my mind and shows that doctor doesn't care about the patient.

If it was a medical emergency call then I see nothing wrong with it. When I have a patient and I am expecting a call I for warn them before the procedure or the consult that I have been waiting on an important call and that I might have to excuse myself. I have to do that all the time

For warning is the key. That shows professionlism and respect for the patient

Did you confront him what the call is all about? Maybe it's something emergency as well that he cannot ignore? Just a thought!

Mine was the other way around...when I had to leave the dentist' chair for a very important phone call...

It was clearly a personal call, as he said, "I cant talk right now".

Almost got in fight the other day about cell phone usage, and I'm a lover not a fighter.

I'm in a family owned sandwhich shop and the guy at the counter is ordering a grinder while on his phone. Mind you he's standing in front of a sign that says "No talking on your cell phone while ordering" or something to that effect.

He's carrying on a conversation on his phone while trying to tell the counter guy what kind of mustard he wants, pickles, onions, etc. and then he orders sandwhich #2 and I say "Hey pal, read the sign and go outside to talk and then come back in". Right away he says into his phone "some jackass behind me in line says I can't use my phone".

I work out 6 days week, wrestled in highschool and box 2x's a week for the past 3 years. There are not many people I'm afraid of. A couple of customers separated us as I went for the guys cell phone and the owner told the guy not to come back.

Sorry, but you are surprised? Only half joking here. That would not surprise me one bit. Irritate me perhaps. But also I would consider the context and if he very quickly hung up that is different than actually going on.
