Which Sub for the future?

Which Rolex Sub would you go for:
2007 14060M Non COSC or a 1985 5513 which has been restored very well with all original Rolex parts, but no paperwork and box.
I want to be able to wear for special occasions and then hand it down to my child when older.

The 2007 14060M - because it is the finest wrist watch in the whole wide world.
Leave those dusty old vintage chaps behind...

Both are nice, but for handing it down... I would prefer a "birth year" watch (that's what I have done)

I do not know how old you are, and how old your children are, but this is how I have been thinking:

My keepers are watches that I have bought NIB from an AD. They grow vintage with me, and have been mine all the time. When it is time for me to hand them over, they will be vintage, and no-one but me have owned them. The watches will carry my story and no-one elses.

Vintage (pre-owned) are for fun. For me, to enjoy, and in several cases flip and replace when I feel like doing it. I consider myself as a "user" rather than a "collector".

I was in your situation fifteen years ago (not knowing your age...), and I bought a BNIB Explorer 14270. It is well used now, dented (by help of my youngest) and never polished. I am a bit more careful with it now, but still use it regularly, and it will have more dents as it will never be polished.

So, my advice: Go get a BNIB 14060M, and let it grow vintage with you and if you can afford it get a 5513 too, to enjoy the vintage feeling already today.

Best,

A

I would go for a new 14060M from a AD & like Anders said let it grow old with you & pass it on down the road.

Also, would it be possible to swap in an old dial and hands (say a red sub dial) on any brand new sub? (yes, heresy I know!)

I suggest that you ask your questions as a thread of their own, rather than asking them in a fellow TRF:ers thread. But to give you short answers on your questions:

1. No. All 14060M are now certified chronometers, with text on their dials. Only if you can find a NOS example at an AD it might be the older version.

2. No. The dial feet are differently postioned for calibers 1570 and 3135. I believe they are also of different diameter.

Best,

A

I don't like the CSC version of the 14060M, so I have purchased a as new 2007 pre CSC 14060M today.
I am going to look out for a 1974 5513 Sub also as a vintage special.

I was looking for a 5513 but chose the non-COSC 14060M instead. I like modern amenities in a beater.

Sorry for jumping in a hijacking thread! Thanks for your patience and answers. Finding my way - not an Internet forum veteran by any stretch!

Congrats, good pick up, and good luck in the hunt for a 5513.
