JJ Rolex Giveaway

Sofar I have not actively contributed to this forum; but I am planing to do so as of next year. I fugure there is no pont in becoming a plegde member for 2011 so close to the end of the year. I might aswell wait untill 2012. The JJ Rolex Giveaway has come under my attention. I think it is a great idea to honor someone who has contributed so much to this community. It is also a nice way to create extra revenue before the end of the year. I do however question the method in which this is done. Personally I feel it is unethical the way in which this is being done. The forum is so to speak profiting from a members death without contributing in any way whatsoever. My question is will part of the proceeds be donated to his family or to some sort of cancer research charity organization?

really?

you have been here since April 2010, and there has been a few give aways since...

as far as i understand it, the pledge does NOT equate revenue for the forum or its owner. it is simply a contribution to the running of the forum.
im sure you understand what the expenses would be running an online discussion board like this.

$28 x 300 = $8,400..... do you honestly think that'd cover the watch and running cost of the forum?

Well if you dont like it, dont pay.... Its not forced upon you to do so. Its called a Donation and you receive a larger message storage capacity.

Its not a raising funds exercise, and its been nice knowing ya!

No. I aplaude the giveaway and understand the reasons. I do however question the method in which this is being done. I had rather they had left JJ out of the equation or had asked members to donate $35 instead of $28 and donated $7 per member to a charitable organization or to his family.

im sure this topic would be best to leave for the "people in the know" to answer.

if you know JJ well enough, then you'd be able to see the "connection" between JJ and SS/Pt Yatchmatser.

If you understand, lets be clear about this. The platty was JJs favourite Rolex. We are honouring a gentle and caring man for his love of Rolex and the Forum he spend countless hours posting and teaching others about Rolex and life. That is priceless.

Firstly, moved to the correct section.

This is NOT a Rolex related subject!

You should never question someone else about what they do for charity. It's their prerogative.

I think it's a very fitting way to honour JJ and to suggest this is a way of making revenue shows you have a lack of understanding about the way this forum is run, and about the people that run it.

I was going to roast the OP's ass but I get the feeling that the members have got this one covered.

Flame away, be my guest.

Yikes -- I missed something....

When and where was this "JJ Rolex Giveaway" announced?

Disclaimer -- I've not been here too much, sadly, for the past 6-8 months or so. Seems I've got some serious catching up to do.

I think that's a disgraceful attitude to take OP.

I haven't been on these forums long but I know enough to know that it must be a costly exercise to host - far more than the 'giveaway' pledge amount + the watch + all the other wonderful goodies that have been so generously donated by some of the stars of this forum.

From what I have read of JJ he was a truly remarkable individual and I can only surmise that he would be delighted that this was being done in his honour and, furthermore, if he were here today he would be the first out with the matches to flame you for such a needless, pointless attack on the spirit in which this forum is run..

I'd hope that we don't flame Lorenzo, I think he has just made an error of judgement, and was probably done with some good intentions.

Ah well, may as well get it off my chest.

Let me make one thing clear to you.

The pledge giveaway will be over subscribed in any case.

They ALWAYS are, each and everytime.

Your comments about JJ and the forum are insulting to his memory and the forum.

I can go back all the way. JJ was a very very special member here and in his times of woe received much love and extraordinary assistance from key members here.

I am party to what's going on and has gone on and can be clear about two things.

1. There are members here who are both extraordinarily generous and also very much "under the radar" in their gifting.

2. You've given NOTHING no neither JJ nor the forums.

All mouth and no action, makes me sick.

This giveaway activity could have gone ahead without any reference to JJ.

Alternatively we don't need to have a giveaway activity at all.

I totally refute the suggestion that money is being made from the passing away of JJ.

To make that allegation is misconceived and insulting.

The fact is we have had a number of these giveaways over the last couple of years and they have all been extremely popular and sold out within a matter of a few days.

The fact that this giveaway was dedicated to the memory and celebration of JJ is in no way intended to use JJ to obtain a financial advantage. It was to remember a friend and I doubt the original poster would call JJ his friend or even know who he was. Rolex Junky you don't have JJ or any other member for that matter listed as 'a friend' on your profile.

Rolex Junky you also say that you 'will contribute' to the running of this forum, but its been over 1.5 years now and you haven't seen fit to avail yourself of that opportunity. That's O.K. as contributing is not sought from you or expected. However, its convenient to say 'you will', lots of people say they are gonna do it, but never do.

Rolex Junky you are someone who professes to know something, but you really make false assumptions that amount to public accusations which are entirely false.

The time spent setting up and managing giveaway activities takes a lot of time and effort. The forum is one of the largest and most popular of its kind on the internet and the forum, despite what you may think, does not run on free air in cyberspace, it does in fact take money to keep it running.

If the consensus is to end this activity, I will have no difficulty. Full refunds will be given to everyone.

In a heartbeat, of course.

Just don't allow one loudmouth spoil the the fun for all pledgies and taint the memory of a special member.

Is it standard practice for mods to encourage flaming? Is flaming not against the rules?

Is it standard practice for a member to try to admonish and impute the character of moderators publicly without giving any prior private notice or private query?

I am trying to take a breath here and remember that one misinformed, tactless, and just plain dumb position doesn't define even a small percentage of the membership. The give aways are terrific and the vast majority of us look forward to them but would contribute anyway to keep this place up and running. Steve, I appreciate everything you do and am sorry you have to listen to this kind of garbage at all. JJ would love what you are doing.

There was also a public discussion (started by lol-x) on what watch would be best for the next giveaway...

It was the consensus of the people who contributed to that discussion that a YM "platty" would be most appropriate and would be a good sybolic gesture to honour and remember JJ. It is since then that the JJ conection has gathered momentum and, IMO, a nice touch that other JJ related prizes have been offered (the Nike shirts for eg).

I also feel Steve has made this givaway more inclusive than ever by making it so that one may only enter once, therefore allowing more people to participate.

Double post, sorry!

I'll take this as an opportunity to thank everyone involved once more and reiterate that the VAST majority of us are behind you and totally understand why you've dedicated this to JJ's memory.

I'm sorry the responsiveness of the forum is a little slow at the moment, it is undergoing a monthly backup procedure.

You know some people do have to work behind the scenes to keep this forum running. Strange as it may seem to you Rolex Junky the forum just doesn't operate on fresh air.

The other thing about fresh air is some don't deserve it at all.

well said, mark. thank you.....your calm and balanced response saved me from making getting all worked up on this one.

to the OP, i think a good idea would have been to first learn about what JJ meant to this forum and the many people on this board who were touched by him before making such wild accusations. also, you probably should have known your post would get many people excited (to put it mildly), and, well, the best approach, in hindsight, would have been to air your grievances privately with the mods and let them explain themselves to you. they are reasonable and honorable people and surely would have taken the time to respond to you appropriately in private.

yes, it's a public internet forum where anyone can say what they please, but, the way this thread crosses so many lines in so many negative ways, it's simply disgraceful.

Don't assume that its in your discretion to make a contribution or that it will be welcomed or necessarily accepted. We do have standards and you fall well short of the mark. I'm only saying this publicly because you wouldn't have it any other way.
