Sorry about the downtime............

But Dalip suggested we get a SSL certificate that will make the forum even more secure than ever before.

An SSL certificate will provided an added degree of security for personal information.

Thanks a lot Dalip

Do you guys know what is an SSL certificate?

You know Steve, I was pretty much like that yesterday while lurking and having fun on TRF...

When suddenly it all went down...

And all of that because of Dalip!?

Thank you for your hard work guys!

TRF is a great community with excellent members and content. I only wish there were competent and knowledgable admins to maintain the site itself.

SSL =. Secure socket layer

Very common, used for most on-line shopping sites, banking sites tc. you will typically see the little lock at the bottom of your browser, and the URL will be https (instead of the usual http).

Don't be duped into paying too much to a certificate provider. Around $100 is reasonable.

SSL was the holy grail but now has become less so. DigiNotar got some hacker sites fake SSL's and the whole game is now in new turf. See the Story

SSL = Salt, Shot, Lime.

Do 10 of them and you get a certificate.

Spellcheck?

Anyhow, it was a harsh and honest assessment. It doesn't take an expert to see that TRF had no A-records for the better part of a day. I don't know who is actually in charge of TRF's hosting, but they're making some very basic mistakes that would not only have a huge impact to the community, but also potentially de-rank TRF on the major search engines.

That's just it. These problems are all externally facing as well.

I'm concerned that whoever is assisting Steve with server administration isn't qualified to be running a site which is likely quite dear and important to him and the members.

That is something Steve is aware off. Insulting him who is running the site and the hosting company is not going to get us anywhere. He knows the issues, let them work them out. Your insults are not helping.

The spell check was noted at the word "knowledgeable"....Write that down Trev!
I appears you have the upper hand, and can sling shots from the side....

Now for basic mistakes.....TRF is not a perfect science, nor has it ever been portrayed as such. It's a forum growing exponentially, in leaps and bounds..
The influx and data transfer and members, is always never ending, as is the software needed to keep it up. This is by no means free, nor is it taken for granted!!
If you feel you know better, start you're own forum Trev, and best of luck to you!!
Until then, think about what & how you say things! It may help get you out of a jam!! (just saying!!)

This was very well said Rob. While reading your post I couldn't help but think about that sentence in Pink Floyd's Us And Them: And after all, we're only ordinary men.

Actually, they're both correct:

I think you'll find there's quite a few server admins/unix nerds who will disagree with you. Scaling and securing software (like vBulletin) is somewhat of a science. It's certainly not trial and error, or based on luck, or undocumented and uncharted territory. TRF isn't unusually massive, it's on a scale dealt with successfully by many online communities.

I do have experience designing and helping with forums in various capacities running on varying platforms. I do know several people successfully maintaining forums with huge bases of users running on big hardware at places like Softlayer.

If Steve ever needs assistance from real experts, he simply needs to send out the bat signal. I can think of at least a couple of guys who would be willing to lend a hand (or big server space), free of charge.
