New Memeber with questions...

Hello all,

I am new to the forum and will be on the hunt over the course of this year to pick up my first Rolex. I will be budgeting around 3 to 3.5K for my purchase.

I plan to buy used and I would like to pick up either a two tone DJ or a dateless SS Submariner. Is my price range accurate for those models? Also, what kind of age range should I realistically expect for my budget considering those two models?

Any advice/tips would be greatly appreciated. I currently live in the Dallas/FW metroplex. If there is anyone in the area, I would love to hear your recommendations for trusted local dealers.

I look forward to all your comments. Thanks in advance to all!

you can pick up a datejust SS with box and papers for between 3-3.5k for sure.

The sub might be harder in that price range perhaps without box and papers though and then you might have a shot

You'll need to do some smart shopping - but it's possible for a SS DJ like David said above.

I don't really see you finding a nice Sub at that price - but you could get one needing some work to remove imperfections. Then get the rehab work done as your budget permits.

Welcome to the Forum. I suggest as above--do your homework and go try on some SS models and something will catch your eye--hopefully in your range!! Happy hunting...

In the Dallas area you can try Dallas Watch and Jewelry on Midway. They keep a stock of watches that changes over time. I've bought two ExpII's for sons from them. A friend bought a used DJ from Dallas Gold on 35, also.

I've bought used sport models for your price range, but you have to be patient and you have to learn a little about the brand and all the options. A used DJ in tt or ss can be had for your range, too. If you'll start looking at ebay, you can get some idea about price ranges, but you really have to be careful about buying from just "anyone". If you'll hang around this forum for awhile, you can learn most of what you'll need to buy the watch you want.

I expect any oyster-case Rolex to last 50+ years, so I'm happy to let someone else use a watch for 10-20 years before I buy it.

Thanks everyone for the info, I really appreciate it! After reading some of the responses I did some more poking around on the net and eBay.

It seems as though a black Sub with no date goes for around $4 to $4.5K. This looks to be the model I'm leaning towards. I know this is about $1K above my previously mentioned budget, but I'd rather stick it out a little longer to get the model I truly prefer.

Does that seem like a fair budget for a SS Sub with no date? One seller I saw was Beckertime who had several SS no date Sub's in that range. Are they reputable? Has anyone here done business with them?

Also, in regards to maintenance, how often should a Rolex be serviced? Is there a set maintenance plan for them much like a car? What is the avg cost of maintenance?

The recommended time frame for a Rolex to be serviced is every 5 years. But of course that is the manufacturers recommendation and some here go longer in between services. I have a Sub No Date and it's a great watch so just keep your eyes and ears open. Also check out the For Sale section here on the Forum!!!

Good choice to hold off and save for the watch you want.

As for service - 5 to 7 years $650.
