Hi, I'm new to this group ... I have a beautiful Rolex Datejust Ladies Steel 18k White Gold Watch. yesterday I dropped it on the bathroom floor and smashed th face. I thought they were virtually indestructable. I was wrong.
Anyway, I took it to a jeweller (an AD) and they say it will cost $850 to repair. I need to replace the crystal glass, service and fix the dial.
Does this sound reasonable?
The watch is about 10yrs old. ANy idea how much it might be worth?

I just paid Bob Ridley ~300 a watch to replace a crystal on my 16600 SD, and 16610 LV.

The estimate is on par with what I'd expect....

650 for a full service, which is necessary after a crystal smash.
200 + for a crystal and dial.....

re the cost for repair, its reassuring to hear that the price I've been quoted sounds ok. but what an expensive accident! It is the most wonderful watch and I will be super careful next time.

It is a nice watch - but all crystals are the same when they meet hard tile floors. Having the full service done eliminates the worry that some small sliver of crystal got into the "works" and could cause worse damage than that you already experienced.

Welcome to the forum. Come back when you get it from servicing and post a few pics.

Welcome! Scratch resistant glass means less elasticity and more prone to break with huge shocks... Mechanical watches are durable but not shockproof! The price is correct, you should have it repaired by Rolex in my opinion. The price is equal to the pleasure!

Some insurance company's cover all that with no deductible. Did you have insurance ?

Unfortunately accidents do happen from time to time. Hopefully you have unscrewed the crown and pulled out the stem to stop the movement and to prevent any further damages.

Yep as the others said the price is right, all you could try is to negotiate a bit if possible.

Be glad it didn't bend one of the lugs, or damage the crown & tube beyond repair. There was a similar thread on here someplace, one of the lugs got bent and they had to replace the case. Your's was overdue a service anyway, and at ten years, they may find worn parts too.

broken crystals are hard to say, if glass shards got into the movement through the date window, the glass could scratch the dial, depending on how skilled the watchmaker is who is working on the watch... it will really need a full service IMHO. UNLESS the crystal stayed in one piece and just cracked, then your looking at 200 bucks installed for a new crystal.. but if any got on the dial, then a full service is due. 500+ for service.. RCS is the best and only way to go. I don't like private watch makers, they will never be able to do what rolex can.. unless its a vintage watch theres only one man i would use, otherwise for new, RCS all the way

thank you all so much for your welcome and advice. You sure know a lot about Rolexes! It was definitely due a service so I'm looking forward to getting it back and having it working perfectly again. I will post pix when it returns. It is with a watch maker at an Authorised Dealer, he seemed very knowlegible about rolex. I got a bit of a shock when he told me how much it was worth; it was a present and I didnt realise its value. silly me.
