Early 1980's Submariner repair?

My father's early 80's Submariner just quit working. Out of the blue not sure what's wrong. He's apprehensive to get it repaired, thinking it will cost him a fortune. Any thoughts? Should a guy always go to a Rolex dealer? He's in central Wisconsin, USA...anyone know of a reasonable place to get it looked at?

Repairs of a Rolex are always expensive.. It is a luxury item and even a local watchmaker will charge you more for repairs..

It's likely something simple like a broken mainspring, but if he had not had it serviced in the past 20 years, it could be anything..

Sending it in for a true Rolex overhaul is around 600 bucks, but it will come back looking very much like new.. A Dealer can sent it in for you, or you can contact an RSC directly and they will send packaging materials and tell you how to send it (registered mail)

You might be able to find someone who could do it for less, however there usually is a good reason for this. They probably won't do such a thorough or complete job, and if they don't have a Rolex parts account then they won't be able to use authenic Rolex parts.

Your father is probably right about the cost of the repair if the watch has never before been serviced and you want to find someone with a Rolex parts account at the very minimum.Personally I would send it to RSC Dallas despite the cost.
