dust on dial on new watch acceptable?
Hi, I traded in my 2003 datejust [midsize black dial] for the same model but current [178240] last week. My new watch is brand new and came from an AD in London I'm delighted with it. But I just had a close look at it in very bright sun and I can see a couple of small specks of dust on the dial and two small smudges on the hands. They are only visible if you look carefully in a bright light, but now I've seen them I'm annoyed. Given the cost of the watch are these acceptable? Will the AD think I'm a total pain if I bring it back? Or is it impossible to ever totally eliminate dust??
Any advice would be much appreciated. Thanks. S x Last edited by Anstruther; 27 January 2012 at 02:29 AM.. Reason: typo[s!] |

I had dust on my new GMTc and went to the RSC to get it fixed. I imagine the AD could fix this.

RSC will clean it while you wait. It stinks but it's an easy fix.

I live 20 mins from the St James Service Center so that won't be a huge hassle. Thanks so much. And do you know if they can make sure the hands are spotless too? I'd imagine it's hard once they get a tiny bit of finger print on them [which is what this looks like]. I know I'm being pretty pernickety, it's just that apart from my flat, and my car I've never bought anything this expense and I'd like ti to be as flawless as possible for a while. I just tried looking for the dust by holding the watch near a lightbulb and couldn't see it. But when I was on a plane this afternoon and the really bright sun was hitting the face it seemed far more obvious!

Just tell them your concerns and they'll understand. Good luck and let us know how it goes

No, go back to your AD and have them work on helping you get it resolved.

Am in Italy till Saturday, but will go and bug the AD on Sunday [exactly a week after a bought it] and if that's not satisfactory I can go to St James'. Thanks again for the advice. It's good to hear that I'm not being totally ridiculous!

I'd take it back to the AD and get a new one.

I took a GMTIIc back to the AD a few months after I bought it after spotting "foreign objects" under the crystal. They took it to the RSC and had it fixed quickly.
Good luck

You are within your right to have these minor imperfections taken care of and since you live so close to a service center I would bypass the AD and just take the watch straight to them to get it fixed.....

So would I. They shouldn't charge you and you cut out the middle man which will only cost you more time.

How does Rolex let this out of their factory?

Absolutely unacceptable! Make them fix it. A few years ago my local AD did a 5-year service on mine and left some dust on the dial. I did not notice right away but took it back and he fixed it while I waited.

RSC Beverly Hills fixed my "lint" speck while I waited. I think going back to the AD adds unnecessary delay in getting it right. I'd go right to the RSC for the fastest fix.
Plus, unlike the AD, the RSC will actually perform the pressure test when done to make sure it keeps it's waterproof rating. |

Well I'd say that mistakes do happen and even with a brand like Rolex. I would personally take it back and ask them to fix the problem but I wouldn't make a big deal out of it while asking it.

You paid for the service, use it. I wouldn't care what AD thought. And it's actually very easy to fix. Probably while you wait, assuming he has watchmaker on board.

Nope. Your closest RSC will rectify the issue promptly (and at no cost to you. if the watch is indeed new) though!

Well that sucks. I just rang St James and spoke to one of their service engineers who said it would take TWO weeks [ten days minimum] to clean the dust and re-seal and inspect. I asked if there was any chance it would be quicker, and said that I'd been asking for advice on this forum and had heard that it was relatively simple to remove dust. But she was adamant. I'm not sure it's worth being watch less for that long. But given it's not my fault and the watch is only six days old [well, six days since being bought], I'm not overly happy. Heigh ho.

Agree. Two weeks is not that long, really, and who knows, it could turn up sooner. Go forth.
