Best car in economy class

We are looking into an Elantra for a car to keep in Houston and break away from always buying a Toyota.
I was looking at a 12 Corolla LE but its close to 1800 more than the better equip Hyundai....and the Hyundai has more HP also.
We have a 11 Camry 4 cyl LE and a 4 cyl 07 Highlander and never have had one problem from any Toyota.
As hard as we try we keep getting sucked back to Houston having to deal with my 83 year old mother and house that never sold.
Renting a car for a month is way way to expensive...

With Toyota you paying for the name, but your also getting better resale value. If you're going to resell it I'd buy the toyota or honda, if your going to drive it into the ground hyundai makes a good car from what i read and it's worth the savings to maybe go in that direction.

I have sold cars for a long time. Recently 06 to 09 Honda's, from 09 to 11 I sold Toyota's. For a few months this summer I tried out selling Virtual Orchestras. The boss owned a New Sonata. We went to one corp meeting from Naples to Tampa. I will have to say the back seats of a Sonata are the worst in the business. I drove to the rest of the meeting because I refused to sit in the back of a Sonata for more than 15 min. Toyota will have the best ride of any other in its price range. Honda is a great car ride is good. In a Honda you will have more road noise but also Honda's have independent suspicion in all 4 wheels which give it a very sporty feel. If quite ride and comfort are important to you, stay with Toyota no need to be a rebel

Civic is super car. Corolla a little bit more quite ride. The Civic may not be as visually striking than an Elantra but absolutely a better car

I thought that when we got my wife a 2002 Rav4. At 67k miles the transmission tore itself all to hell, and the fix was going to cost almost as much as the car was worth. Never again will I trust one.

My wife is looking to sell her Subaru Forester [2001 with 24K..........] and is looking for an urban run around with good mpg. On Saturday we drove the Kia Soul and Forte and I was impressed particularly by the Soul. It is quirky looking, but a good ride and fairly functional with back seat down cargo room. We drove the Honda Fit aand Insight with its bad visibility. I liked the fit, but she felt it was too small. We looked at the Nissan Juke that gets good reviews, but it seemed like a lot of capricious design that would date rapidly.

I agree with this. Civic has a very noisy cabin.

The upside is you get very good fuel economy, and a seemingly indestructible engine. its a reliable car.

I have been fortunate....I've owned vehicles from Toyota, Lexus, Honda, Acura....never a problem....I am a big fan of the autos from the land of the rising sun.
I prefer Toyotas best of all.......that new rear wheel drive sports coupe Toyota (Scion label in USA) is doing w/ Subauru sounds & looks real good.

Yes I like Toyota/Lexus best but even looked at Subaru Forrester yesterday
I really have no use for 4 wheel drive in Houston or Phoenix....no snow
Ive put over 200k on toyota's with no major engine work....never owned a 6 cyl always 4 cyl for gas mileage and Toyota is known for that 2.4 with no timing belt....I always try and buy that engine.

The last Civic was great in performance but so uncomfortable for rides over one hour that I totally, permanently got turned off from Hondas. Now have a Nissan Altima and am happy, happy, happy. More road feel than the Camry, but more comfortable than the Civic or Accord...and good gas mileage.

I've driven a Nissan Altima and like it quite a lot.
I wouldn't buy the Hyundai.

I would lease a car. No need to spend that money on a car that will be parked at the airport waiting for you. I would find a l leasing agency to help me decide the best deal on a restricted mileage contract. Just a thought....
As far as buying, some manufacturers offer guaranteed trade in values at the end of 3 yrs. I would go with the one that looses less $. Clearly you are not looking for a car the "moves" you just the one that makes sense. Whatever you decide, let your mom decide on the color!

You could pick up a 3-4 year old car for way less than $5k. My fiancé's grandmother has an elantra she keeps in FL at her 2nd house. I uses it when I was down there in Jan. nothing fancy but gets the job done. She paid $1800 for it with 35k miles from one of her neighbors. I would say just get something pretty reliable that goes from a to b. good luck.

Elantra .... 2012 Car of the year in South Africa ....and a few accolades worldwide.

Hyundai and Kia are making some really nice models and are the "new Toyota",just like Samsung is the "new Sony"

I drive a 1.2 Hyundai i10 to work and back.LOVE this little car.Runs on very little gas.Power to weight is good so its quite nippy !!

(We used to have hordes of Toyotas in the stable, but no more)

My wife has 84k miles on her '08 Kia Sedona with zero problems (tires, breaks, and battery doesn't count). I would buy that brand again in a minute. Hyundai and Kia have come a long way.

I looked at a 1.6 Nissan Versa 4 door today....15500 and 38/40mpg on highway
We may go with that if we can find a white one with light color interior
