When you buy a watch

Do you go with your heart or do you use your head?

That is, is it more emotional, or is it more intellectual in regards to how you select the watch you decide to get?

I'd like to think it's the later Dan, or, a little of both...however, I think lately it's been heart taking a front seat!

It's a balancing act for me at first. Have to feel the pull to a particular watch, then do the homework.

In the end though, it has to be the heart or why bother?

I always try to be logical in my decision-making and gather as many facts as possible and also to consider the financial impact of my decisions.

However, when a watch as stricken a chord with my heart, I have been fortunate enough to make it work, even with less than all the facts or regardless of the financial impact.

When I'm lacking in facts, the new purchase gives me the impetus to research more and well, fortunately, I do have a cash-flow to make up for my watch affairs of the heart.

...And us, on the other side, asking why didn't you buy that!?!?!?!

As for me, it's a mix of both. I buy the watch if I like it but I always make sure that I can easily afford it (that is, without emptying my bank account) and that it is a good or safe move (I make sure that I never take unnecessary risks regarding the buyer, the brand or the watch itself).

For any of us to spend $5k+ on a watch, or have multiple watches, it has to be from the heart.

If we asked our brains the question 'should I buy this watch?', it would tell us that it is completely illogical to spend more than $50 for something to tell us the time.

If we asked our brains a slightly different question 'do I have enough discretionary money to buy this watch', the brain may say 'yes'. Or it may say 'no'.
If it says 'no', our heart has a veto vote and we end up finding a way to buy it anyway!

I work in a very narrow corridor:

I will buy a watch if it sits between 45% heart 55% head and 55% heart and 45% head.

I also only buy on Wednesday and the 4th Friday in any month............

It is surely emotional otherwise we would all just buy the Casio, Timex etc that most suited our needs (no disrespect intended to Casio or Timex owners).

If its a cheaper watch then let the heart have at it, but once it hits 2,3,4,5k+ then I have to ask myself if it will hold its value? Will my kids want it someday? Does this make any sense whatsoever? And the big one because Im not filthy rich, if I had to get out of it, could I without losing my shirt?

I believe it's lust - like every Corvette buyer thinks inside head, "How cool is this? Me looking cool in this hot 'vette..."
But then tells friends, "How could I turn down the great deal I got?"

IMHO, the addiction is 100% wow factor!

I try to be logical but when that happens I end up with a watch i'm not 100 percent in love with and end up trading that sucker in for something that I wish I bought in the first place. haha so no more head from me just pure emotions in watch purchases =). But I also make sure I can afford what I think I want before I even leave the house

For me it's both, but emotion drives the desire to get it.

I use my mind when I determine whether the watch makes sense in regards to my lifestyle. I also have to determine whether I actually can afford it, and whether or not I will get the one real nice watch, or opt for some variety. Since I have more than one this was a consideration for me.

The watch has to tug at my heart strings in order for me to consider it in the first place. Is there something there in regards to the way it looks. Is it special in regards to craftmanship, fit, finish, or design. I'll conduct some research but everybody has an opinion, so does the watch somehow capture my imagination? Will I stare at it today and tomorrow as well. Does it make me smile?

Thanks for sharing your thoughts. Sometimes we agree but express it differently, and sometimes we disagree but for good reasons. However it's always interesting to read your comments and get an idea as to what drives others in regards to this hobby.

For me it's a mix depending on the type of watch.

For new and readily available pieces, it's pretty much just emotional..... what do I like , what haven't I got and how do I think it looks on me.....

For vintage, I spend far more time on research, checking out originality, reading, reading reading, hours on the internet deciphering all the little intricacies....etc etc...... so far more intellectual.

But in terms of what I prefer, ultimately, anyone can go out and buy a new piece if they can afford it......... so nothing particularly special in that other than getting a nice new watch........

But vintage is a completely different animal and requires far more research, establishing contacts and the inevitable hunt and tracking down of the piece in question and that really appeals to me.

So going forward, I think I will be concentrating more on building an interesting vintage collection with occasional new pieces thrown in for good measure as and when something really appeals.......
