she's finally home

this basket case left for complete spa treatment on Feb 8th - not only was the bezel, insert and retaining ring missing, but winding action was really bad, setting time or date was "hit & miss", loose rotor etc

and finally came home earlier this week

i actually purch'd this basket case July 2008 and it only took 4 years to actually get into gear getting it restored. Complete svc, keeping really decent time (so far over 2 days, about 7 secs a day)

lesson i learned on this one - buying a basket case when the market is "high" isn't the way to go. Between that and the cost of the "NOS" bezel & insert and the cost of svc, parts needed etc, next time if i'm going to buy high, then at least do it assembled, "turn key" or ready to wear.

while waiting for it to come home, i was thinking i'd put it up for sale, take my loss now and move into something else - now that it's home, i don't know. It does everything i want a watch to do, on the wrist.

one interesting note - this is the first time i've had a watch come back from svcing and actually have the crown action feel like a new watch ( screwing down, winding and date/time setting). The watchmaker is a rolex svc agent and has other connections to rolex, enough so that he was able to source me two orig blue bezel inserts (in the shot above it's wearing a slightly faded NOS insert that i paid way too much for).

Job well done Larry .....

... and I hear what you say about the cost of projects.

There's a real buzz though when a project comes together.
I'd be very proud to own that Tudor Sub

thanks guys...

but you can chisel this one in stone - no more basket cases - just not worth the effort & time even if i'd saved a good bit, which i didn't

but it's on my wrist now, with a 2 yr svc warranty and all's well on the home front

That's a stunner Larry, you should keep that one...

Would you mind posting a pic of your tudor 7928's, yes both of them, and your snowflake together so the rest of us can admire...

Al

my head almost exploded this morning

don't know why i didn't notice it earlier - the watchmaker installed a tudor svc crown

the guy's super competent, but apparently not "vintage versed" - now i've got to see what a rolex svc crown is going to run and get it installed local (not going thru the ship to canada routine again

just when i thought i'd hit the bottom of the money pit on this thing

on the competency part, timing has actually improved over the past few days that between yesterday 11:00 AM and a few minutes ago it lost a grand total of 1.5-2 seconds

i'll be putting the 7928s and the 7016 up for sale soon - not sure they'd fit in a thread about a snowie

Larry - if it was just the crown any chance he can ship you your old one? They are pretty easy to do or your local watchmaker could swap it out.

Did he swap in the newer style triplock tube or do you have the older style still in still?

Update - I assume the tube is the later style as you have the Tudor service crown - still a quick fix

he included the orig crown with the watch when

he shipped it back but it was bad - would only engage about 1 & 1/4 to 1 & 1/2 turns

i know i can get it local but i'm going to see if i can't get some kind of concession on the cost and i'll ship this one home -

ironically i've got a new in plastic dish container rolex twinlock crown - not a svc crown but the orig crown - but want to save that for thee right watch

Wow, looks like a completely different watch!

Don't sell it, it looks like a new watch, keep it and enjoy! It's got some history behind it now, it's worth keeping!
