Newer Model Car or New Watch to Collection?

Interested to see what people think about this choice. My buddy bought an AP 44mm ROO RG instead of upgrading his car this year. I thought it was an interesting choice!

Why would he need to "upgrade" his car?

Open to interpretation. Let's say you had 10k to spend or 20k to spend on a watch.
You could sell your car for market and add that money to that and get whatever car that buys you?

I lease a 3 series. I drive aboutn 4,000 miles a year. I'd rather have a new watch than spring for a 5 series.

Tough to say for me.

I mean, if your current car is a 2008 5 series, maybe I'd rather get a watch than spring for the 2012 5 series.

However, if my car is a crappy 1999 Corolla... then maybe I'd rather get a new car.

Tough poll.

Check out great article in 6/3/12 Bloomberg Businessweek called "Wrist Management" about Bob Maron:

"You can drive a Ferrari, but you can't drive it into a board meeting"

Wouldn't be much of a car"upgrade" for that kind of money but huge money with respect to a watch so I vote watch unless car is in disrepair

Maybe not - but I'm willing to bet everyone in that board meeting knows you drive a Ferrari...

I live in chicago and drive a 06 Volvo. I think having a nice car is nice but the city will destroy the car. A nice watch will have very little deprecation compared to a nice car. If lived in a city with more parking I might upgrade the car!

A car is just a black hole for money; after 5 years you'd be lucky to get 25% of purchase price. i drive the cheapest car that will do the job and don't give a damn what people think. I never feel the need to "upgrade" my car. Mind you I never feel the urge to buy a AP ROO either, but maybe a Patek....

Anything beyond basic and reliable transportation, or a basic timepiece are discretionary spends as they are beyond non-essentials. I have an interest in watches, in cars, in home theatre, and in computers so my 'play' money is directed towards whatever is taking my fancy at that point in time. Last couple of years it was cars and home theatre, this year it's watches ....

Why you ask that in a rolex watch forum ?
If you ask in a car forum you will receive totally different poll :))

I've already made that choice

My car is 7 yrs old and I have no plans to upgrade it any time soon. But I have 5 Rolexes, 2 Omegas, 1 Breitling, 1 Sinn.

My buddy who owns a fancy Audi A6 wears a $100 watch (which looks like crap because it's over 10 yrs old).

Different strokes...

You can have a nice watch with you 24/7, the same can't be said for a car. I've never had much interest in vehicles.

My policy will always be buy the cheapest "acceptable car" that a girl is not going to be ashamed to be seen in or is not going to get me laughed at when I pick it up from the valet. A used BMW 3 series would be an example of something that would do the job. Cars don't do it for me at all but I'm not showing up to take a girl on a date in a 1995 VW Polo.

haha no kidding Eric. I was even considering getting a new CLS, lexus, etc. etc. to upgrade my Acura.
Then I sat back and thought, "Damn that new AP ROO white dial is sexy"

All my friends think im nuts for driving an acura and sporting watches worth more than the car is worth!!
