How to change ownership on a preowned rolex?

After seeing how someone attempted to get their watch serviced, it was then confiscated.

How do you go about changing ownership on a watch that may still have warranty or no warranty?

I'm in a market for a Daytona and now seeing something like this happening, I'm kind of hesitant on purchasing from TRF or even grey dealers.

Let me know

When I bought mine pre-owned SD 16600 from a prior TRFer, I brought mine to the Toronto RSC. I asked them about that and they said that when you service it, the new name on the service receipt will the new owner.

I guess so long as the serial number of the watch is not flagged as stolen, you'll be okay.

Would sellers reveal the serial numbers though? It seems that most pictures on ads, they censor it out. How do we go about to check on the serial numbers w/Rolex then?

If the seller is honest, then he/she would reveal and show the s/n of the watch.

Correct!!! I, before sending my SD to Dallas RSC for overhaul gave them the serial # to see if watch had been serviced before. I guess I wanted to see if reps. Reaction changed incase watch was stolen and if they'd push me into sending watch in for service and then confiscate the watch. But no reaction change and never been serviced by RSC before per rolexes data base.and so i sent watch in with no problems and new warranty is under my name now. It was my first purchase here from TRF seller and no regrets.

If you are concerned about this, make sure to get the watch covered by personal articles insurance.

I doubt an insurance policy would cover purchasing a stolen watch.

You are correct. They most certainly would not.

.... the caveat here being that said watch was purchased while knowing it was indeed stolen property. Otherwise I think you might still be covered.

I bought mine recently from a trusted TRF seller with almost 20 months of warranty remaining. It's running a little fast and I will send it to the RSC for a quick regulation on my next trip to the city. I suppose they will verify ownership then. I'm not worried since I'm sure the seller will make things right if something does go wrong.

I've also purchased from local grey dealers and made sure they provided a receipt with the serial number clearly stated.

Wouldn't you want to know if the watch you bought was stolen ??? After all, it really would belong to somebody else and returning it would be the right thing to do. The attitude of being fearful that you may have to return somebody elses rightfully owned property is a bit cold..

In any event, millions of Rolex watches change hands and the odds that you buy a stolen one, unless you frequent back alleys, is about the same as winning the lottery..

To your question: There is no such thing as "changing ownership". A Rolex does not have pedigree papers like a puppy, or a title like a car.. It's more like owning a toaster. Rolex doesn't have any idea who owns a particular watch unless it's either been reported lost/stolen (this also benefits you), or unless it has been sent in for service. At that point, the service records will be noted with our name as the "owner".

But, that still does not stop somebody later from reporting it as stolen. That report just becomes the next "owner" in the database. They will not call you up because you had it serviced last and tell you that somebody else reported it lost/stolen. You should always keep records of your expensive property including serial numbers and a good description.
