Was there a "momemt" that pushed you over the edge to buy your Rolex?

For me it was a negotiated deal with my employer. I was flying as a contract pilot for a European airline. As part of the contract they agreed to fly my family over to visit me every two months. Well time flys so I never used the benefit. When My 6 month contract was over I approached them and asked for cash in lieu of the "free" tickets. They balked, at first, but after I explained the error of their ways I got a check for about $9000.

That is how I could afford my first Rolex. Otherwise I can't see spending sooooo much on a watch. (Still, I'm glad I did)

YES! Did a major FX trade from CAD to USD right when the CAD reached parity. Blind luck! Oh, and I've been waiting 7 years to get my Daytona. So I can't figure out if the 'moment' was the FX trade or really really long 7-year-moment...

Yes, when my stupid cheap Timex stopped running last month and I was late to my daughter's dental appointment. Other things led up to that incident - years of sacrifice to get my husband through medical school, then quitting my jobs to become a full time mom to (eventually) three kids, sort of losing my identity along the way... getting out of practice with taking care of myself... taking on all of the responsibilities of running a household and raising the kids while my husband deals with the stresses of his own career... finally understanding that I deserved something nice - a reward. It hit me squarely in the head, as I was rushing to my daughter's school to get her to that appointment, that I was going to buy myself a Rolex. I grinned big the rest of the way. I still have a crazy life and little time to myself, but this great new watch helps me cope (and definitely keeps me on time!). Hmmm... a year of counseling (which I don't have time for anyway) or a new Rolex? The choice was easy.

The peer pressure from this forum was just too great not to have a Rolex!! Actually, it was the introduction of the new GMT2C, with all it's improvements that put me over the edge. Plus, I found a local AD that had 2 and was willing to deal a little.

Hi First post.
Always had a fascination with watches and precision instruments. The idea that 150 moving parts, all working together keeping relatively accurate time and fitting in the size of a wristwatch is mind blowing.
Now add that it can handle temperature extremes and harsh conditions and I'm captivated.
Most folks just don't get it. They see the money and say "It's just a watch." No, it's a machine and it's amazing.

I have always been fascinated by watches. The idea that 150 precision moving parts can work together keeping relatively good time in a space as small as a wristwatch is exciting. The fact that it can withstand temperature extremes and remain robust enough for daily use in some of the harshest environments is truly impressive.

I had been having some health concerns and after undergoing some tests I was given the Dr's promise that if I lose some weight and promise to check back now and then, I'll be ok. My wife seemed glad over the news that I would live on and so for our 15th wedding anniversary last week she bought me my very own Rolex GMT-Master II in stainless steel with black face and black bezel.
I've ALWAYS wanted one. Most folks don't get it. They see the big money and think "It's only a watch." But it isn't just watch. It's a machine.
I'm very excited. It is truly a dream come true.

For me - I've just always wanted a Rolex and made a promise to myself that I would never wear a watch on my hand - Unless it was Rolex.
After 15 years of not wearing a watch - I though it was high time - to pull my finger out and get one !!

Oh, it's not that bad... "pull my finger" is something you say to someone right before you flatulate. It is especially hilarious when the puller is under the age of 10.

When I went into an AD in 1989, I did in fact NOT look specifically for ROLEX but just went in to browse.

The AD asked whether I would like to see an SS Sub Date he had just gotten in.

I saw it, loved it at first sight, and bought it. Three minutes later I was out of the store.

I had looked at a black sub date at my AD, fell in love with it, and knew it was what I wanted. When I went back a few weeks later, interested in making the purchase, it had been sold! I told my AD that if he could order it for me, I would buy it. A month or so later, Rolex had sent him a black sub date, straight from the factory, as he requested. He called me and I went to check it out. It was absolutely amazing, especially knowing that only a few people had ever had their dirty hands on it! I couldn't imagine buying it with some small scratches that have resulted with a watch being in the showcase! That was one of the selling points for me, other than the black sub date being, in my opinion, the perfect rolex for all occasions!

I am incredibly happy with my purchase!

2) I found this forum and spending about a month reading the great post and looking at the fabulous photos.

It was a that time I realized I had to buy "myself" a ROLEX and become part of the great ROLEX family and tradition !!

Kind of in the same boat as you, except no Iraq. Just a hotel room in Tajikistan. 2 Rolexes and one PAM later, and looking for a PRS-2.

I wonder how many other troops got Rolexes out of the war.
