Baume Mercier and Audemars Piguet...

Spending Sunday evening in he Lumber Yard in Malibu my wife and I were strolling around. I really like this place because they have 3 aquariums 2 of which have African Cichlids and I would guess 90% of the people think they are saltwater. They are just amazing aquariums.

I learned this week that Audemars Piguet AD is located there and before lunch I told her I wanted to look at these cool watches. My wife points out a certain watch and says, "hey isnt this the watch you saw a couple of weeks ago on the ad" She was referring to a Zenith El Primero with the exposed movement. When I come and look it is a Baume Mercier. My parents have matching Baume Mercier they bought on a trip in Europe but other than that I have never looked at them. I found the watch to be pretty nice and the price was even nicer. 3500 MSRP. What is everyone's feelings on these watches?

My immediate impression was positive, it looked nice and clean. The hands looked like they were stolen off of a cartier watch with a blued steel look on a white dial. I don't see much about baume mercier automatics so I really dont know much about them.

What are your impressions on this?

Here is a link to the watch on their site.

They look okay, but not for anywhere near $3,500. They make more sense in the $1,000 range.

Well you're comparing two vastly different brands. AP is at the top of the chain, while B&M is toward the bottom. Horologically speaking. Get what you like though!

I have a B&M Hamptons something or other just because I wanted a square faced watch. It's nice for what it is, especially since I got if off a TRF member for a very reasonable price.

They look nice but quality is not there.
I have a F1 chrono which was stunning but the
Chrono did not last long and when I inquired about
repair they just kinda blew it off like it wasn't worth it.
This was about 10 years ago though...

Baum and mercier is like a Saab or Volvo, ie nicer than a gm or Toyota, better than average
Rolex is like mb or BMW most would consider it a luxury car

Patek is rolls Royce
Ap is Bentley

They are all nice watches, but in different orders of magnitude of nice....

well I have had my TAG for about 18 years through hell and back and it works and I am saving up for a datejust II but I probably wont have the cash until next year ( i wont charge a penny on any watch) I could pull the trigger on that watch because I liked it alot. I found teh same watch for 2500 so its easy to knock of sig. amount off of the price. What I dont want to do is put money into a watch that in 10 years I wont have. Anything I get I want to last me till its time to pass it on. The other thing is it doesnt have a screw in crown and I am worried about getting moisture in it. I have alot of aquariums and every once in a while I will just dunk my hand in to do something. I dont want a watch that cant handle an accidental dunking here and there.
