Other brands hold value?

So what other brand of watch other then Rolex holds their value?
Every Rolex I have owned I have either got all my money out of or made money. No other watch has been that generous to me.

Thoughts?

Depends on what price You buy at like all things

I've broken even or made a small amount on all Rolex

Every brietling I've had has made me a very, very generous return.

In terms of msrp though they lose not that much maybe 20-25%? They do very well.

Resale is stronger in Rolex but there are a lot on market at any time so could take a bit to sell.

You can bank on Rolex because frankly its a "Rolex", but almost any Swiss made watch will either hold their value or make you some money. If you want to talk numbers, any -high end- Swiss made "Complicated" time piece is a sure bet.

Rolex watches and a few others like Patek have always held there prices well in the market place.But Rolex watch are not all about £££££££$$$$$$$ its about owning and wearing one of the finest mechanical watches made today.

Other than Rolex, some Omega models also hold value like the Speedmaster Pro Limited Editions. I've been meaning to land a meteorite sub-dialled Speedy Pro. I hear that model holds value.

Some Panerai models hold their value well - the Luminor Base and Marina models in particular


Basically, any popular steel Swiss watch that is not produced in vast quantities (or is but the manufacturer/dealers won't admit it) and not deeply discounted will resell pretty well (YMMV)

I'm seeing the 2254.50's on the used market for $3-500 more than I paid from my AD new.

Your reading to much into my statement my friend. I'm not talking about a 10k Rolex, I'm referring to complicated watches that cost 100k plus in regards to a high investment standpoint. That most likely will only go up in value.

With few exceptions (Rolex and maybe PP) the high end watches take a pounding at resale. If you pay MSRP, expect a substantial depreciation as you walk out the door. The exception that someone is going to mention will be when you pay a discounted price, which rarely happens with Rolex.

As to complicated watches (spelled even more expensive, usually), there is an even smaller market for these, so resale can be very spotty/inconsistent.

Panerai can be good, but you have to choose the right model.

Everything depends on what you pay and that includes Rolex. Pay retail on any watch and you are out big. Only exception is certain Pateks and AP LE's--other than know your watches and entry points. Buy right and buy smart!

Most watches bought new you will lose money on. sometimes if held a long time you will make money but not always. Rolex if bought with a discount or used will maintain or increase in value. Depends on the model too.

Rolex
Audemars Piguet
IWC (Pilots and Portugues)
Patek philippe

Good list Spunky, and I agree. I have found the more common Panerais are not holding up too well if bought new. My 232 is the only one that has done well so far.

I would say most brands will go -40 to - 50 % the day after you bought them

Rolex sportsmodels and Panerai go - 35% (in both cases only steel)

Patek, only chronographs and steel Nautilusses will keep good value ( barely - 20%). Calatrava,annual and perpetual calendars also - 30 %
Also the super complications like 5207 - 3939 - etc but these are so expensive we better forget them :-)


Exceptions that go ABOVE list

Panerai - limted edtitions if historic correct so forget about gold cases , chrono's, and other complications
but think about the 127 - 217 - 232 - 249 - 339 - 382 - 390 - 448 - 449 - 360 - 21 - 230 and a few others

Patek all the lemania based chrongraphs but these are discontinued.
Limited editions like the advanced research series, boutique edtions, ... and ofcourse vintage pieces

Rolex ... nothing. It used to be the 16520 and 116520 but they ended in 2008.

AP SOME limited editions but also here this seems to be a thing of the past. Since they charge euro 30 tot 35K for a LE offshore people are not insane enough to give a premium anymore

Zenith ... here is a bet I want to take. The new Montre d'aéronef TYPE 20.
This wil be the first Zenith which sells good above listprice (again only the titanium) - this is my personal opinion but after 20 years collecting I think I know what I'm talking about

I echo the advice from Unknown.

Most high end complications take a beating at auction with the exception of some of the rare Patek and Vacherons.

You can get some wonderful exotic pieces for 30% of the retail at auction.

Another brand keeping a good resale would be Dornbluth. With waiting lists of up to 9 months for a new one you can sell one with little to no depreciation.

Offshore's arent 50% off, they tend to hover at 35-40 range. I just bought and sold a Panda at 17k a few months old. And the new releases hover in this area.
