What vintage Rolex do you want?
I posted in General asking everyone what their WISHWATCH is. I found out that it is called a Grail. I like that. I like learning all the new Rolex lingo.
In any event, see picture of my Rolex wishwatch and it is for sale. I love everything about this watch, except the selling price ! ! ! They want $2900. Hmmm. |

That's a nice watch Linda, but I think "wishwatch" may be better than "grail" in this context. Most use the term grail to describe something not only desirable but also nearly unobtainable to them, typically because of the expense involved. Therefore, there's a certain aspirational aspect to the term. That said, some (not me) are fortunate enough to eventually acquire their grail(s).

I'd like a GMT 16750. Bought one new in 1989, and it was stolen and never found after all these years. I guess whoever has it never sent it to Rolex Canada for servicing. I wish I had kept the serial number handy. I never knew something like the internet would develop as it has.
Today, I can't justify paying 5-6k for something I only paid $2200 for back then. And to Linda; I love those Cellini designs. I have a catalogue form 1990 showing the mens and ladies versions, and I've loved them for decades. The gold milanese bracelet is gorgeous. |

In answer to the OP's question, what vintage do I want, my wishes are simple: one of every Sub model on the market in 1959--5510, 5512 SCG, etc. Not a birth year, just the year of my one-and-only Sub.
Won't happen in this life. |

My first Rolex was a 9-yr old used Sea-Dweller I paid $855 to own. Sold it 3 yrs later for a profit!
Duh...wish I had that 2000m ref. 1665 now, but I won't pay the price they're getting today... |

To the OP. Yes, Linda, that looks like the vintage style ladies watch that you enjoy. A nice looking watch to be sure and in wonderful condition.
As to your question - perhaps an older Explorer I or a 5513 Sub for me. Just thinking, but not doing much to procure one, though.

For the more affordable I'll go with a Red Sub. For the might need to sell a kidney to help defer the cost, I'll go with a manual wind Daytona, with screw down pushers and black bezel insert.

I wish I wouldn't keep wishing for watches. I get interested in a brand and think I must have one and then I get over it. But I encounter another brand and the same thing happens. Recently I discovered the merits of Rolex. I'm in my learning phase now, but I like the idea and look of the Subs. I like the look of the 5513 the best. But for everyday wear I need a date function so I switched to Sea Dweller, but am unsure if I like the DRSD or the all white text (guess that's not a Great White or is it?). Thanks for asking. This is is a very nice forum.

To answer Linda's question, I don't know enough yet to pick a vintage Rolex grail. So far, the most I've ever spent on one watch is 4k, and that was after a 30% discount. ( brand new Omega AT midsize 8500). That's a lot, for me. As a mostly retired medical professional, I don't even look at anything in the unattainable range. Vintage watches offer me the opportunity to indulge my passion, in a more affordable fashion. I am drawn to the amazing quality and endurance of a vintage Rolex, Omega, Zenith, et al. Seeing what's out there, and researching what I find, is at least half the fun of this hobby, for me. If grail equates to financially unattainable, I don't have one, as I like to get what I want. I'm spoiled, I suppose, as are most of ... "My generation. my generation, baby...." ;)
