The non-ceramic GMTII's are long discontinued but can purchased if you look around.

Until this year Rolex changed the first letter of serial.
F in circa 2003/4 then D , Z , M , V etc The gmt master II changed model to the ceramic bezel during Z / m ( 06/07) serial so M is the last of the older model GMT II without ceramic and Z are the first of the ceramic GMT as there is a slight crossover in production. Cheers.

New serial numbers are 8 digit random, but these won't apply to a "Coke" as said...they are no longer made. The ones you mention, F and Z will denote can give you an idea of it's age. An F is older than a Z. If you look around there are places with general years of certain serial prefixes. While they will get you close to production periods, but it is important to remember it is not exact science.

As Chris said it was M. I could be wrong, but if memory serves there were very few M around. If you get lucky, you might find an M, but if it has a 3186 Movement, you will pay a premium. Usually close to 8000.
Sorry for the edits, I had to jog my memory.

Just be prepared to shell out $7500 plus for that. If it's a GMT II coke and an M serial, it will have the 3186 movement...which is not common in that model. Most GMT II (model 16710) came with the 3185 movement...but starting somewhere during the Z serials, the 16710's were beginning to show up with the 3186 movement. Because of their rarity, collectors will pay a hefty premium for that watch with the newer movement.

Just for clarification it will not have 3186. it MAY HAVE it.
Cheers

Don't matter what GMT you get as the bezel inserts are very easy to change from black/pepsi or coke. And will add IMHO its not worth paying any extra for any Rolex watch that has a 3186, its just a slightly modded 3185.And now the 3186 has been superseded by the 3187 which in reality a 3186 with the paraflex in-house made shock system. But all are still based largely on the cal 3185 and many parts interchange. Some say certain models with the 3186 are rare but being rare IMHO is something produced in numbers under 10.While certain models may have a 3185, 3186, 3187,rare they are not, just made in fewer numbers. But there must be hundreds around and most of those the owners have no clue what movement is in the case or care.
