Advice for a first time buyer

I am going to be purchasing a new watch in 2 weeks and need help in deciding between a Cellini Prince yellow gold and a black submariner 11610. Im leaning towards the prince but need some more advice.

Two different styles you are considering...

I am biased with Sport models, thus I would say Submariner..

..but go with what SINGS to you!

Same boat here...plans in place via a trusted TRF for my first purchase as well...went with the Sub C 116610LN...classic.

Those are two very different models. If it was me, I'd go with the 16610.

I think the sub is both classic and iconic. It's the type of piece that goes well with both jeans as well as a suit. It is after all the James Bond watch. I personally am more bias towards the sport models. I love the clean look of the sub.

Also, there is resale and ease of resale to consider IMHO. I think the sub will be much easier if when the times comes to sell trade flip etc.

They are 2 totally different watches and shouldn't even be compared.

If you want something more dressy, then go with the Cellini Prince.
If you want something sporty, then go with the Submariner.

IMO, the Sub can be worn in almost any occasion.

Wow you really have 2 watches miles apart!! Have you been to AD to try them on and handle them in the flesh? If not I say you really should. Your choice may be clearer.

I went to the ad but only for the sub because they dont carry princes in the ADs near me if i were to get the prince i would be shipping it in from a dealer in florida.

I would go with the Sub. It's a classic, but that's my preference.

Very different watches and if I could only have one it would be the sub. It is very versatile whereas the prince is more of a dress watch only IMHO

I wouldnt exactly say the Prince is a classic. Rolex is truly most known for their sport models.

Are you buying for rarity or for what you want to wear most???

One seems more of a formal watch, and the other is a sportier watch. I think the Sub-C is more versatile in both formal and casual environments. If James Bond can make the Sub a classy watch with a suit, so can you.

Two very different watches. I can tell you what I would get, but my needs and likes are are likely to be different to yours. Will they be for daily were? Special occasion wear? Is re-sale a big consideration? Don't buy a watch just because it's getting rarer, buy something that you want to wear!

This is advice that you should take and act on. There is no substitute for trying them on. Don't skip doing this or you may be flipping watches, and that gets expensive quickly.

You will find that the vast majority of people on here will recommend the Sub, as this is a sports watch oriented forum, and this reflects what people usually do with Rolex. The Cellini range isn't vastly popular, and most will go down the Oyster route.

However, if you do go for the Prince, you will be buying one of the most unusual watches in the Rolex range. It has a distinct look, is the only watch in Rolex's entire offering that comes with a display caseback (and a beautifully finished movement), and hints back to a long and rich history. You will certainly stand out from the crowd with a Prince.

I guess you have two options - you can go down the safe route and buy a Submariner (it's reasonably tough, it'll hold it's value better and will be easier to sell, but you'll see a lot of them in the wild), or you can make a more unusual choice and be in a very exclusive crowd

FWIW, I would not buy a modern Submariner - the truly great Submariners were produced up until the 1980s, I don't think the modern versions have lived up to their legacy.
