No BS answers on this thread please....

a non-wis friend noticed this eve at thanksgiving gobble glut fest (canadian) that i look at my watch often and clearly can't remember the exact time. i had to pause and say, you're right! not down to the minute but rather quarter to or quarter past is about as close as i sometimes get... i thought about it and my smartphone, car and even microwave are my natural go-tos for the time. my watch is more like a piece of jewelry or an old friend i admire. i was actually surprised someone noticed because i typically do the quick glance so often, i sometimes don;t even need to know the damn time.

anyone else notice this when you really think about it? how often do you just glance at your watch but not really see the exact time? i actually do it often. when i want the time, my smartphone or car clock is usually my natural default.

does this mean a wrist watch is more jewelry and accessory than primary timekeeper to someone like me??? or both? or am i just losing it?? what day is it again>>??

shrinks... help!

My watch is a fantastic accessory that happens to tell the time when I'm not next to my microwave.

i look at my watch all the time just for the sake of looking at it. and I agree with you that its just a piece of jewelry that happens to tell time. if i really needed to know the time my phone does a great job

I rarely use a cell phone. I keep one in the car in case I need to call if I have a problem otherwise I use my home phone. I dislike phones as I am hearing impaired. I see young people who have no life. All they do is walk around with a phone on their ear or 'texting'. A disturbing amount have virtually no verbal skill.

What's the world coming to?

I always check the time with my watch.

I too find myself looking at my watch more often than not to admire the details, rather than tell the time.

I often stare at my watch in appreciation of it, independent of any need to know the time. With other people around, I usually strategically position my wrist in my line of vision so it doesn't look like I'm doing it. The only person I think that has noticed is my wife who then says "you're checking out your watch again, aren't you!"

Haha, yeah, I glance / stare at my Rolex's 10x more often that I stare at my plastic digital that I wear to the gym and when doing active stuff.

I see my Rolex's as jewelry that also functions as a practical timepiece. But as jewelry first. And hence I also treat them as such, admiring them, polishing them, treating them carefully, storing them on their little pillows etc lol. They get used daily, my gold and plat watches, so they def are not safe queens. I wear gold rings, diamond rings, silver necklaces, diamond earrings, so yeah, it's all jewelry to me.

I wouldn't...we are all hopeless anyway!

In all seriousness, as much as I like to admire my watch on my wrist from times to times I still use it to tell the time. I do not use my cellphone or any other device other than my car clock from times to times when I'm driving. It is nice to look at your timepiece if you find it beautiful (and boy do we find ours beautiful! ) but it remains an useful (or tool) piece of jewelry, therefore I personally use it that way as well!

I actually use mine to tell the time, but often just like looking at them too. I check their time-keeping against the digital clocks in the house (oven, pc etc). In all honesty, I look at whatever clock or watch is easiest to see at that time.

Quite a few times per day! Sometimes, if it stopped, I don't bother to set the time for a few hours.

It becomes habitual to glance at one's watch whether or not one is actually seeking the time. If you stop and think about it or observe your own behavior, you'll find that you probably have several such habits that you perform daily several times without thought.

Glancing often at one's watch can also be a sign of boredom or agitation. Some may remember that George H.W. Bush was roundly criticized for glancing at his wristwatch during one of the campaign debates.

WISes have the added problem of just wanting to admire our watches, so we're more guilty than others.

There is no question that the wristwatch is as much a fashion accessory as it is a timekeeper.

On Jake's Blog there's a document by Hans Wilsdorf himself which acknowledges this fact as a reason for his company to pursue the wristwatch as its main product.*

So yes, the watch is a functional fashion accessory and it has been almost since its adoption, first by women and then by men who saw soldiers returning from the Great War with watches on their wrists.

* Generally speaking the wristlet watch was bound to bring about a certain revolution in the industry: a [sic] naturally caused an increase in sales, not only on account of its novelty, but also because by its very nature it called for more frequent renewal.

More exposed to damage than the pocket watch, it was not of the type to become a ”family heirloom” handed down from father to son for several generations. Apart from this, being worn on the wrist, it was destined to become, more than any of its predecessors, a modish accessory, and object submitted to the vagaries of fashion, that is to say, calling for change and variety.

Again, the wristlet watch is the type of article of which each individual likes to have not only one, but several; men and, still more, women wish to have a selection of watches suitable for different occasions, for work or the social round, or to harmonize with their attire.

I had very early realized the manifold possibilities of the wristlet watch and, feeling sure that they would materialize in time, I resolutely went on my way. Rolex was thus able to get several years ahead of other watch manufacturers who persisted in clinging to the pocket watch as their chief product.

I have that problem too and it actually caused me headaches on more than one occasion.
Like you, I cannot go more than about a minute without looking at my watch. If I am in a situation where I shouldn't, I find a way to do it without being too obvious.

Anyway, I had people in the past asking me if I am bored with them or do I have a better place to be...

I am working on it. lol

Being that I am older...I actually use my watch to tell time.....back in the old days it was the only convenient source for telling time. Remember there were no microwaves, cell phones, in cars a clock was an option not standard like today. So you either had a wristwatch on or used a pocket watch!!!
Take it easy.....Leo

In my job, I need to log times all the time so for me anyway, my watch is still a tool.
Tell you what though, when I don't have it on is when I really notice how often I look for it.
